THE LOST

Adventurers don't always enjoy a fortunate fate. You'll encounter some who fell in battle and would like your help reaching the afterlife.

Underground River

  1. Enter the cave at 11 in the Underground River. You'll have to fight several Shadows, a Greater Shadow, and an Unsleeping Guardian, when you come in. The Unsleeping Guardian can summon two Wraiths, which can drain levels.

    Continue a little further into the back of the cave and you'll also encounter the spirits of Litla, Wortis and three other adventurers who met their end battling an Ettin. You can attack them and earn 20,000+ xp if you win. They can be dangerous, as at least two of them are spellcasters and all of them have significant magic resistance. Or you can calm them down and assure them that you didn't kill their mortal bodies, and then accept their plea to help them reach the afterlife. That begins the Quest.

    If Glint is in the party, he'll interject during the conversation and recognize that Litla is a relative on his mother's side. That contributes to completing his personal Quest.

    Their corpses have 5 Remains, 40 Throwing Daggers +1, 40 Arrows +2 and 40 Arrows of Piercing.

  2. The Ettin Ghost will attack you at 18. You could just kill it for 4,000xp and then loot the Cloak of the Strange Beast afterwards.

    An alternative is to fight it for a while and it will speak to you after enough time has passed. It was killed by the same adventurers who became Ghosts in the cave. It wants its club back before it can move on to the afterlife. Go to the cave, and deal with the Ghosts violently or peacefully if you have not already done so, and then loot the Ettin Club +1 from the Ettin skeleton at the back of the cave. Return it to the Ettin Ghost for 3,000xp, and it will leave behind the Cloak of the Strange Beast.

  3. The entrance to Kanaglym is at 27 in the Underground River. It is guarded by the undead spirit of a dragon named Halatathlaer. Getting past her is the start of the Ghost Dragon Guardian Quest. She'll warn you away. You can fight her. She amounts to a less powerful version of the Shadow Dragon in Baldur's Gate 2, as her breath-weapon is single-target and drains levels. But she's still plenty of challenge for a Siege of Dragonspear-level party. A loophole in the geas placed on her is that she's compelled to threaten anyone who approaches the entrance, but not compelled to attack anyone who approaches the gate. So you can simply walk past her, and she's more than happy to let you through.
  4. Kanaglym

  5. You'll start off at 1 in Kanaglym. Kherriun will be at 6 as the leader of several close-by Dark Magicians. The Dark Magicians at 5 will join in as well. There is overlap in that defeating Kherriun and all of her Dark Magicians is the objective of The Cabal Quest.

    Halatathlaer will initially join the fight against you, under Kherriun's control. But if you inflict enough damage on Kherriun then her soul jar, the means by which she controls Halatathlaer, will shatter. Halatathlaer's spirit will be freed and she'll instead start attacking the Dark Magicians. You can if you wish let Halatathlaer slaughter them by herself. Or you can stay and try and rack up as much xp as you can. Keep in mind that you only get xp for a given enemy if you land the killing blow instead of Halatathlaer.

    She'll speak to you once the battle ends. Freeing her completes the Ghost Dragon Guardian Quest.

  6. Now click on the pit at 5, which is actually a conduit to the Fugue Plane, and deposit the Remains. The Ghosts of Litla and her fellow adventurers will manifest and thank you for freeing them for passage to the afterlife. The party receives a 6,000xp reward.
