THE UNCOMMON COLD

Find a way to help a Priestess of Ilmater heal the sick in the Coalition Camp.

Coalition Camp

  1. A Priestess of Ilmater named Dosia will be at 22 in the Coalition Camp. Several soldiers in the Camp have taken ill and she would like your help finding a cure for them.

  2. Speak to Xerra at 23. Your Bhaalspawn being a Cleric with a Wisdom of 14 or more or a Druid with Wisdom of 14 or more will lead to a conclusion that a poultice can help him. Asking Glint, Jaheira, M'Khiin or Viconia if any of them are in your party will also lead to the suggestion of a poultice.

  3. Speak to Zidrand at 24. Your Bhaalspawn being a Cleric with a Wisdom of 14 or more or a Druid with Wisdom of 14 or more will lead to a conclusion that a poultice can help him. Asking Glint, Jaheira, M'Khiin or Viconia if any of them are in your party will lead to similar conclusions that being in proximity to others with the sickness makes it worse.

  4. Speak to Yestimell at 25. Your Bhaalspawn being a Cleric with an Wisdom of 14 or more, or a Druid or Shaman, will lead to a conclusion that the illness is making him agitated. Asking Glint, M'Khiin or Viconia to look at him will lead to a similar conclusion. Yestimell will rise up and attack the party, forcing you to kill him.

Having Corwin, Jaheira or Minsc look at him will lead to a conclusion that rats behave in a similar way when they are suffering from disease. Yestimell will likewise attack the party afterwards. The comparison to rats will open up a different dialogue option and Quest pathway when you speak to Dosia again.

  5. Speak to Dosia again after having spoken to all three patients.

Suggesting that the sick be separated apart from the healthy and left to die, or killing the sick to prevent the spread of the disease, will fail the Quest and result in a -2 loss of reputation.

A willingness to find a cure for the patients leads to her suggesting that you follow up with a Druid named Onoroth in the Bloodbark Grove.

  6. If any of Corwin, Jaheira or Minsc drew the comparison between Yestimell's behavior and sickened rats, you can bring that up with Dosia. She'll suggest that a Druid or Ranger can communicate with any of the Rats in camp to gain insight into the sickness.

There's a few Rats in the southwest part of the Camp. The tab key won't reveal them. But you'll notice little brown things running around camp if you watch carefully. Run your mouse clicker over one of them so that it's blue circle also appears. That's when you can talk to them.

The first time you try to speak to a Rat, it will reveal itself as the Wererat leader of the rat pack. It will resent your intrusion on its pack and attack you. You can kill it for 420xp.

Speak to a rat for a second time and have either Jaheira or Minsc (or Boo rather) speak to it. Either will learn that rats alleviate their illness by rolling in the mold that grows on a tree in the Bloodbark Grove.
  7. Bloodbark Grove

  8. Onoroth will be at 5 in Bloodbark Grove. He will indicate that he has a cure, but only if Dosia had specifically suggested him when you previously spoke to her. He will want you to kill a Greater Basilisk at 12 and bring him its claw as proof. If you previously took up the suggestion of communicating with rats when you spoke to Dosia, then the dialogue option of a cure won't show up with Onorth. He'll still keep his store open.

  9. Making progress, whichever pathway you take, requires fighting Bombardier Beetles and Boring Beetles at 8, and a Shambling Mound and Bombardier Beetles at 9.

  10. The Blackthorn Tree is at 10, which is an available source for the cure if you were not previously referred to Onoroth. The tab key won't reveal it, but there will be green fireflies flying around it. Move your mouse-pointer around in its upper branches until you notice that your clicker becomes two rotating arrows. That's when you can click on it to obtain the Blackthorn Bark Cure.

Several Dread Wolves led by a Vampiric Wolf will appear a little to the east and attack. The Dread Wolves can only be finished off with acid or fire damage.

  11. If you need to get the cure from Onoroth then you'll likely have to fight the Burning Skeletons led by a Skeletal Mage at 11.

  12. The Greater Basilisk is at 12. Be sure to have protections in place for whichever character is within its vision (e.g. Protection from Petrification spell). It leaves behind the Basilisk Claw when killed.

Bring it to Onoroth and he'll give you the Blackthorn Bark Cure.

Return to the Coalition Camp after you have obtained the cure.
  13. Coalition Camp

  14. Speak to Dosia again at 22.

Giving her the Blackthorn Bark Cure straightaway results in rewards of 6,000xp, the Martyr's Morning Star +2 and either +1 or +2 reputation depending on how many patients died.

Insisting on a reward and accepting three Potions of Extra Healing from her results in 6,000xp but a -1 loss of reputation.

Insisting on a reward and saying the potions aren't good enough fails the Quest and results in -2 reputation.

*NOTE* Successfully completing the Quest so that the sick are cured amounts to a Heroic Deed for purposes of Disturbing Implications.
