DRAGONSPEAR CASTLE: BASEMENT

Here is where you'll discover Hephernaan's true intentions, and trigger events that will intensify the conflict between the Crusade and the Alliance.

Dragonspear Castle, Basement

  1. Here is your initial point of entry after coming up the lift at 17 in the Warrens.

*NOTE* One event, confronting Hephernaan, needs to occur in order to progress the Important Events Quest. Using the Poison of Terror at either 3 or the food supply at 5 also helps with the Quest.

  2. Several Crusaders led by Belben will be here. They'll attack no matter what you have to say. All of the Crusaders as usual will have a Potion of Healing. The Crusader Archer will have 40 Arrows +1. The Crusader Cleric will have 20 Bullets +1. The Crusader Scout will have a Potion of Invisibility. Belben himself will have a Two-Handed Sword +1, a Potion of Extra Healing and a Potion of Clarity.

Note that going back down the lift at 1 means that the Ogres operating the lift will have heard the commotion, and will sound an alarm that will turn all Crusaders in the Warrens hostile against you.

  3. You can use the Poison of Terror on the barrel here to poison the Crusaders' water supply. An Ice Mephit will teleport in and sound the alarm, but you can kill him easily enough. Every individual party member also gets a 4,000xp reward. That will be progress for the Important Events Quest. *NOTE* It also amounts to a Villainous Deed for purposes of Disturbing Implications.

The problem is that Hephernaan and his minions will gather in the room to the south at 2, although that fight is inevitable sooner or later. Doing it here has the point of allowing you to set up crowd-control and cloud spells on the room to the south from this room. Damage Hephernaan enough, and he will flee. The fight includes a few more Crusaders, two Mages named Esserin and Olvanaun, and a Crusader Sergeant who has a Potion of Extra Healing.

  4. This chest has a Potion of Absorption, a Potion of Fortitude and a third random Potion.

  5. A pile of sacks here will have the Crusaders' food supply. You can also poison it with the Poison of Terror. Every individual party member also gets a 4,000xp reward. It won't attract a Mephit to sound an alarm. But there's a chance that hostile Crusader forces, including Hephernaan and his minions, will gather in the room at 2. And again that will be progress for the Important Events Quest. Poisoning only one of the food or the water is necessary to fulfil Torsin de Lancie's request, but you can poison both the food and the water if you wish. *NOTE* It also amounts to a Villainous Deed for purposes of Disturbing Implications.

Also, poisoning the food supply now means that a Crusader may show up at random afterwards, here or in the Warrens or in the Underground River, to sound the alarm. That means all Crusaders in all three areas will turn hostile.

A small Troll named Bjarn Littleclub will be besides the sacks, and he's been helping himself to the provisions in this room and hiding from the Crusaders at the same time. It's up to you whether you kill him or let him go.

  6. This chest has the Troll Pen Key, which may come in handy when you're ready to begin your final assault on Dragonspear Castle itself.

  7. This locked and trapped chest has 40 Bolts +3, 40 Bolts of Lightning and 40 Bolts of Ice +1.

  8. This cabinet has 5 Potions of Extra Healing, 5 Elixirs of Health and 3 Potions of Clarity.

  9. Crusaders led by a Crusader Sergeant will be here. Attacking them is likely to lead to the Stone Golems at 11 and Hephernaan and Essirin and Olvenaun from 11 all joining in. The Crusader Sergeant has a Halberd +1 and a Potion of Extra Healing. The Crusader Mage has 20 Bullets +1. The Crusader Scout will have a Potion of Invisibility. There are also three Crusader Elites. One of them has a Potion of Extra Healing and a Potion of Hill Giant Strength. Another has a Long Sword +1, a Chain Mail +1, a Potion of Extra Healing and a Potion of Hill Giant Strength. Another has a Long Sword +1, Potion of Extra Healing and an Oil of Speed.

  10. This locked and trapped chest has 40 Bullets +3, 40 Bullets +2 and 40 Bullets of Ice +1.

  11. Two Stone Golems will stand guard next to this gate, but there won't be any way through it. The Stone Golems will attack you if you fight either the Crusaders at 11 or Hephernaan at 13.

  12. There likewise won't be any way past this locked door.

  13. HephernaanHephernaan will be in conversation with his master in this room along with his two minion Wizards, Esserin and Olvenaun. They could end up seeking you out and attacking you if you use the Poison of Terror to either ruin the water supply at 3 or the food supply at 5. Nearby foes like the Crusaders at 9 and the Stone Golems at 11 may join in. Hephernaan will himself flee once he takes enough damage. Esserin has a Quarterstaff +1, a Traveler's Robe, a Wand of Frost and a Potion of Extra Healing. Olvenaun has a Quarterstaff +1, 20 Darts of Wounding, an Adventurer's Robe, a Wand of Paralyzation, and a Potion of Extra Healing. *NOTE* The confrontation with Hephernaan, whether it occurs here or at 3 or 5 by reason of using the Poison of Terror, is a key event that needs to happen to progress the Important Events Quest.

  14. This trapped and locked chest will have the Crown of Lies, the Robe of Netheril and a book called Magical Entrapments in it.

  15. This trapped and locked chest will have a Scroll of Lower Resistance, a Scroll of Spell Immunity and a Scroll of Spell Shield.

  16. The spirit of Daeros Dragonspear, the builder and founder of Dragonspear Castle, will be trapped here. He explains that Hephernaan is a servant of a being from the Nine Hells, and hoped that Caelar's Aasimar heritage would be enough to open a portal to Avernus. But it wasn't, so Hephernaan now strives to obtain the blood of a Child of Bhaal, you.

Freeing him results in an 18,000xp reward, and the niche at 17 now having Daeros's Full Plate.

  17. The niche here will have Daeros's Full Plate +1, but only after freeing the spirit of Daeros at 16.

  18. *TO CONCLUDE CHAPTER 10* Returning to the Warrens now means having to fight everyone there, as the Ogres will sound the alarm after having heard your fight with Belben.

If you survive and make your way back to the Underground River, a Crusader will likely show up to sound a general alarm that will turn all Crusaders hostile against you. That means having to fight your way past any more Crusaders who get in your way. That also means you won't be able to complete any quests in the courtyard of Dragonspear Castle.

Returning to the Coalition Camp afterwards will result in a Waterdhavian Guard informing you that Torsin de Lancie, General Stonehand and Marshall Nederlok have gone to the Dead Man's Pass to parley with Caelar Argent. Take care of whatever business you might want to in the camp (selling loot, reputation boosts with Mizhena, etc.) and then travel to the Dead Man's Pass. You'll participate in the parley with Caelar Argent, who makes clear that she'll end her occupation of Dragonspear Castle if you hand yourself over. It inevitably ends with your refusal and Caelar marching away to prepare for a siege (or her own attack). Everyone in the party gets 5,000xp. Now return to the Coalition Camp to defend it against an attack by the Crusaders.
