The Floating Hangman

World Map

The Darcozzi Oath

I sail east and attack a Royal Deadfire Company Master Captain. It sails closer, so I oblige and turn starboard to aim my Vailian Hullbreakers at it. I sink it without taking any damage as I get the drop on it with Flooding on my first volley.

I continue east until I near Neketaka at #17 on the World Map. I hit the arrow button near the top of the screen and right-click on Engoliero do Espirs in my inventory screen. I then press the button that speaks the Darcozzi oath that Aeldys told me about. The Floating Hangman arrives.

*Note* I could of course have done this right away after leaving Dunnage. But the upcoming sequence of events will force me to leave my custom-built ship and jump over to The Floating Hangman. I prefer my own ship, either as the good party or the evil party, for reasons that I'll explain shortly. Being near Neketaka means I can quickly dock at Queen's Berth, and bring my crew back to my own custom-built ship with a minimum of hassle.

Lucia Rivan

Alliria speaks with Lucia Rivan. It is possible to suggest trading Engoliero do Espirs for The Floating Hangman. A Bluff check of 16, a Diplomacy check of 17, or a Metaphysics check of 15 will work as a follow up and convince her to exchange The Floating Hangman for the ship you're currently using, and she gets the Engoliero do Espirs.

Just giving her the Engoliero do Espirs will fail this Quest, and rule out the Principi as allies.

Alliria picks a fight, and chooses the dialogue option based on having defeated Lord Raedric a second time in his undead form during Pillars of Eternity 1. That prompts Rivan to kill a Fampyr who was having second thoughts. All of my characters have reached their optimum levels with choice equipment, so the battle itself isn't very hard.

I get two potential rewards as a result of winning the battle.

The Floating Hangman

One of my rewards is The Floating Hangman. My crew are immediately assigned to it, and it now becomes my active ship. The key benefit of it is that it can sail through any storm, including the storms that appear on the World Map, and the storms of Ondra's Mordar that otherwise prevent anyone from reaching Ukaizo as part of the endgame.

The problem is that I don't want the ship. It's a Galleon where I can't upgrade it from its Infested Hull and Ragged Sails. It also has fewer berths for spare Crew Members.

So I dock at Queen's Berth. I manually take all my crew off of The Floating Hangman, put them back to their previous places on my custom-built Galleon, and make that Galleon my active ship again.

Engoliero do Espirs

The other reward is Engoliero do Espirs as an Estoc. I go to the nearby exit, sell off my excess gear, and bring Rekke into the party for the time being.

He equips Engoliero do Espirs for what's left of the game. Wielding an Estoc with the Vulnerable Thrust modal, and accepting the -15 Deflection penalty, plays into his style of encouraging Critical Hits. Critical Hits against him can either replenish Discipline for his activated abilities, or eventually trigger Unrelenting along with explosions from his Cape of the Falling Star and One Dozen Stood. It's the most powerful Estoc in the game, and is already of Legendary enchantment. The Soul Devourer enchantment imposes -2 on all of Constitution, Dexterity and Might, but will provide +2 to those same attributes if you score a killing blow with the weapon. It also unleashes a Ghost Blades on scoring a kill. I enchant it with Subdued Soul Devourer, which reduces all the penalties of Soul Devourer to -1 but also reduces the bonuses on kill to +1. I preferred it to the higher-risk higher reward Ravenous Soul Devourer, which imposes -3 penalties but also increases the bonuses on kill to +3. I was skeptical how many killing blows he would actually get during ship combats, especially in competition with other powerful ship combatants, and thus became concerned that Ravenous Devourer could turn into an enduring gimp on him. I also added Soulblade, which adds +10% Raw Damage, instead of Blade Feast which replenishes Health to him when a killing blow triggers Ghost Blades.

*** NOTE *** Even the Estoc version of Engoliero do Espirs is flagged as a Quest item. That means trying to have a ship combatant equip it will only mean that it will no longer be equipped by the ship combatant once he's no longer in the core party, and it will return to the Watcher's inventory. There's a way around this. But it requires care, and I would advise making a backup of the file in question. I open the file titled items.gamedatabundle in the subdirectory /PillarsOfEternityII_Data/exported/design/gamedata of the installation directory. I look for the item in the file by its coded name, "Estoc_U_Engolerio_do_Espir". Just underneath it will be a variable, "IsQuestItem","true". I change the 'true' to 'false' and save the file. Now Rekke can wield Engoliero do Espirs without a hitch during ship combats.

I then buy crafting ingredients from both The Dark Cupboard and Cuitztli's in Periki's Overlook. I then "Wait" until just before morning, travel to Serpent's Crown, and buy gems from Una.

It will still be day time by the time I return to Queen's Berth. That's important, as I will soon enter the headquarters of the Vailian Trading Company.

Queen's Berth

*Evil* A Dance With Death

I go around buying up crafting ingredients in Neketaka, and then go to Queen's Berth. I likewise transfer my crew back to my Dhow, and make it the active ship again. I sail back to Dunnage at #9 on the World Map.

Dunnage

I buy rare food and gems there again, and then go to the Balefire Beacon.

Balefire Beacon

I arrive at #1 on the map of the Balefire Beacon. I now speak to Captain Furrante at #4 and inform him that I now control The Floating Hangman (even if I won't be using it). That concludes the Quest called A Dance With Death. I get 54,000xp as a reward, but the real point is to seal an exclusive alliance with the Principi. All other Quests with the other factions now fail. I return to my ship.

*Evil* Llengrath's Message

The evil party now sails back to Neketaka. It is on the way there that they get a visit from the Archmage named Llengrath, riding a dragon to intercept the ship. She appears as an Orlan to reflect Zarathos having killed her during as part of his Pillars of Eternity 1 history. She urges him to make for the Black Isles as soon as he can. This conversation starts the Hidden Depths Quest. I thereafter make it the rest of the way to Neketaka.

The good party will now seal an alliance with the Vailian Trading Company.

The evil party will go on ahead to Splintered Reef.
