The One That Got Away

  1. This is the personal quest of the Devil of Caroc. It begins the moment she joins you in Galvino's Workshop.

  2. Stalwart Village

  3. The next trigger is when you return to Stalwart Village with the Devil of Caroc in the party. She'll want to talk to you (i.e.g there will be a dialogue prompt on her portrait).

Some background will emerge, that her village allowed the army of the bad guys to pass through her village, and found itself on the wrong side of the aftermath. A Perception check of 13, or a Clergyman background, can flush out a little more detail.

She lets on during the conversation that her family was burned inside its home by a mob siding with the victors. Passionate, Rational, and Stoic replies become possible. An Intellect check of 12 can also tease out a little more detail.

She then explains that she spent her life afterwards murdering those in the mob who burned down her village in vengeance, to which Benevolent, Cruel and Passionate responses become available.

She also expresses a desire to hunt down anyone still living who may have played a direct part in burning down her home. Cruel and Passionate responses become available.

If you pursue other avenues of the conversation, you can explore why she may be unwelcome in Stalwart Village. You may catch on that she may have murdered at least one of the locals. It is possible to make an Intellect check of 13 or a Perception check of 14, but neither will get her to reveal much more.

  4. The next step is to speak to any one of Reyfald (at #19) or Renegild (at #24) or Haeferic (in Gref's Rest at #20) in the Stalwart Village and use your Watcher abilities to read their souls. The visions of their soul histories will reveal that the Devil of Caroc's quarry is in the Russetwood.

Do the soul reading for any of the three, and the Devil of Caroc will want to speak with you again. Clever and Stoic replies are possible in response to her initial curiosity about your abilities. She will in the course of the conversation let on that her specific target is a woodcutter named Harmke. Intellgience (13) and Perception (14 or 16) checks are available at multiple points during the conversation to get a little more detail about Harmke's role.

If you do the soul reading on Renegild, you can also straight up ask her where to find Harmke, and she'll explicitly say that he is in the Russetwood. Deceptive and Stoic replies are possible when she wants to know why you asked about Harmke.

  5. Russetwood

  6. Wood CuttersHarmke and his band of wood cutters can be found at #2 on the Russetwood map. An Intellect check of 13, a Perception check of 16, or the use of your Watcher abilities, will let you discover that Harmke did indeed directly participate in the burning of the Devil of Caroc's home. It is up to you whether you inform the Devil of Harmke's identity, in which case a fight ensues, or conceal it and let him escape. It will not have any reputation repercussions, although there is a Cruel option available if you want to kill him.

He and the other wood cutters will be easy to kill, and they'll only leave coins behind. If you do kill them, they will revive as Bitter Spirits led by a Menprwa afterwards should you return to their spot.

  7. However you handle it, the Devil of Caroc will want to speak to you again afterwards. It is a lengthy conversation during which the full range of disposition-based responses will be available at multiple points.
