A Voice from the Past

Copperlane

  1. Dalton is as #15 on the Copperlane District map. A Cruel reply is possible early in the conversation. He would like you to investigate whether some sign of his past love, Rowyna, can be found in the Catacombs below.
  2. The entrance to the Copperlane Catacombs is at #13 on the Copperlane District map.
  3. Copperlane Catacombs

  4. Helig of TheinHelig of Thein is at #17 on the Copperlane Catacombs map. A Clever option is available early in the conversation, as is an Aggressive option although that will provoke Helig and his Revenants into attacking you. There are two basic choices at this point.

One is to attack him and his Revenants. You can position yourself very close to him before starting the battle, so you should be able to cut him down before he gets off any spells. He'll leave behind:
Your main character will be able to use his or her Watcher abilities to communicate with the spirit of Rowyna, which is trapped inside the Soulward Amulet. Rowyna's spirit makes herself clear that she wants her spirit freed from the amulet.

The other possibility is to make a bargain with Helig. He'll explain that his apparent undead state is due to his having been murdered by a rival named Moedred. He would like you to retrieve his a grimoire from Moedred, and give you Moedred's Trunk Key to that end. It is an alternative way of obtaining the Soulward Amulet, but delayed while you pursue a mission on his behalf. Pursuing this route will lead you to the Sanitarium.
  5. Brackenbury

  6. The entrance to the Sanitarium is at #15 on the Brackenbury map.
  7. Sanitarium, Main Floor

  8. You'll start off at #1 on the Sanitarium map. The stairs at #13 on the Upper Floor lead to the stairs at #14 of the Basement.
  9. Sanitarium, Basement

    Moedred
  10. Moedred can be found at #18 on the basement floor of the Sanitarium. There's more than one way to handle this encounter.

At #17 is a trunk that can be opened with Moedred's Trunk Key. If you examine it first, a Perception check of 18 will reveal monster claw marks. Opening the trunk will lead to a Wicht coming out of the trunk and killing Moedred before attacking you. Doing things this way will confirm that there's no grimoire inside the trunk. If you open the trunk after killing Moedred, the Wicht will attack you straightaway.

You can get Moedred to explain why he murdered Helig with either a Clever dialogue option, and a Clever option combined with a Might check of 13, followed by Aggressive or Clever dialogue options. His reason is that Helig was apparently evil incarnate, so he felt completely justified. Pursuing this dialogue branches out into other possibilities.

An Honest reply that follows the combination Clever reply / Might check of 13 will surrender Moedred's Trunk Key to him. Doing so may commit you to killing Helig if you go back to him without opening the trunk, although you can always change your mind and kill Moedred to loot the Key back from his body.

Moedred at some point will ask you to kill Helig instead of him. A Rational reply will decline the offer, while a Stoic reply will fall in with the request.
  11. If you go back to Helig, what happens depends on what happened during your encounter with Moedred. If you come back without having opened the trunk to confirm the absence of the grimoire, or if you act on Moedred's request to kill Helig, then Helig and his Revenants will attack you. The outcome will be pretty much the same as if you had fought Helig without ever having gone to see Moedred.

If you had brought about Moedred's death and opened the trunk so as to confirm there is no grimoire, then Helig will reward you with the Soulward Amulet and explain that Rowyna's soul is trapped inside of it.
  12. Now it is time to bring the Soulward Amulet to Dalton. You have multiple ways to proceed:

    • Select the Cruel dialogue option to keep the Soulward Amulet. Dalton gives you no reward, and you earn moderate negative reputation with Defiance Bay.
    • Select the Deceptive dialogue option to keep the Soulward Amulet. Dalton gives you no reward, but you earn moderate positive reputation with Defiance Bay.
    • Give him the Soulward Amulet followed by a Cruel or Stoic option, or select the Benevolent dialogue option followed by giving him the Soulward Amulet. Dalton will reward you with the club called Dial Ewn Dibita.
    • Select the Benevolent dialogue option, but then destroy the Soulward Amulet. You get no reward from Dalton, and you earn moderate negative reputation with Defiance Bay.
    • Select the Benevolent dialogue option, and then make either an Intellect check of 13 or a Resolve check of 15 to convince him to willingly destroy the amulet himself. He will reward you with the Dial Ewn Dibita, and you earn moderate positive reputation with Defiance Bay.
