Nera Bardatto is at #16 on the map of Queen's
Berth. She would like you to find her brother, Larro Bardatto, for
her.
Larro Bardatto is about to
get into a duel with Orso Valera at #19. There's numerous ways to handle
it. Telling them that a duel is not the way to handle things will result
in a small loss of reputation with the Vailian Trading Company, but will
not otherwise restrict your options for resolving the conflict.
There are ways to disperse the crowd and prevent a duel from taking
place:
Making a Might check of 18
Making a Bluff check of 5
Either making a Resolve check of 16, or asking if the feud is
worth dying over along with asking for alternatives, followed by a
Bluff check of 3 that threatens to suck their souls into the Beyond.
If you decide to let the duel go ahead, you still have some options
about how it will play out.
You can bet 10cp on either Larro or Orso. If you lose the bet, you lose
the 10cp. If you win the bet, you get 100cp. Keep in mind that the very
action of placing a bet will result in a small hit of reputation with
the Vailian Trading Company.
You can select the dialogue option of asking whether it's worth dying
over and suggesting alternatives, followed by a Diplomacy check of 3.
That will result in the duel ending on one combatant drawing first blood
against the other. If you do not select this option, the duel remains
one to the death.
Once the duel starts, you have several options. You can select "watch
the duel to its end". Without any assistance, Orso will defeat Larro as
a matter of course, whether the duel is to the death or to first blood.
However, as we will see, Orso winning first blood can get complicated
too.
If your Watcher is a Priest, he or she can bless either Larro or Orso
to ensure your choice wins the duel.
You can also make either a Watcher-only Streetwise check of 2, or a
Watcher-only Insight check of 2, which will set up options for "Watch
the duel quietly for now". You can do more than one check as a set up.
After that, select the "Watch the duel quietly for now" dialogue choice.
Having made a Streetwise check of 2 will allow you to trip either Larro
or Orso to ensure that the other wins the duel. Having made an Insight
check of 2 will allow you to taunt either Larro or Orso to ensure that
the other wins the duel.
Note that using any of these interferences will result in a small hit in
reputation with the Vailian Trading Company.
If the duel is to the death, the victor will be Orso if you either
helped him or let the duel run its course without any interference.
Larro will win only if you run an interference on his behalf.
If the duel is to first blood, Orso again will still win if you either
interfere on his behalf or let it runs its course without interference.
However, they've changed their minds and want to kill each other. If you
wait and observe, Orso will get careless and unknowingly provide Larro
an opportunity to kill him.
You can prevent any casualities by:
Encouraging the crowd to cheer and earn Clever disposition
Yelling at them to stop with a Resolve check of 4 and earning
Benevolent disposition
Putting up a shield between them if your Watcher character is
either a Paladin or a Wizard
Doing any of those options will result in Orso giving Larro a non-fatal
cut on the cheek.
Larro will win only if you interfered on his behalf. You then have
three choices:
Tell Larro to kill Orso, which he will do.
Tell Larro to spare Orso, and Larro will give Orso a non-fatal cut
across the cheek.
Make an Athletics check of 2 to kick Orso's sword back to him, who
then kills Larro.
The end of the duel marks the completion of the Task itself,
and you get your xp reward. If it ended without either Larro or Orso
dying, you will get a minor gain in reputation with the Vailian Trading
Company.
Nera Bardatto will be at #3 on the map of the Bardatto Estate. She rewards you with 800cp if Larro still lives, or 1,000cp if you state that you didn't help Larro out of charity.
Ezzali Bardatto will be at #4. She'll give you an additional 1,000cp if you interfered in the duel in such a way as to help Larro win.
