Tawenu will be near the door at #28 on the map of Queen's
Berth during the day time. He feels his Huana tribe has been
tricked into an unjust contract by the Vailian Trading Company, and
would like your help. He also indicates that he attempted to have an
improved contract drafted for him, but that the Trading Company
representative named Luca snatched it away when he presented it as
a counter-offer.
Luca will be at #4. Keep in mind that any resolution to the Task that
restores the island to Tawenu's tribe will result in a small loss of
reputation with the Vailian Trading Company and a small gain in
reputation with the Huana.
Even if you can't solve the Task during this dialogue, speaking with him
about the contract and learning that Tawenu tried to resolve matters by
use of a forged contract is necessary to open up other options for
completing the Task. You can make an Insight check of 3 to notice that he has spilled wine on his shirt. That can open up other possibilities should you wait until he's in the main
floor of The Wild Mare at night before speaking to him again.
Also, you won't be able to convince Luca the first time you speak to him. But you can make a Streetwise check of 4 to convince him to give you 1,100cp
to stay quiet. The Task will still be uncompleted though, so further
action will still be needed to seal the deal. A benefit is that you'll still have all your options open after collecting the 1,100cp.
Options that are Pro-Huana will displease Maia
but earn points with Tekehu.
Leave briefly and speak to Tawenu about the forgery. Now go back inside and speak to Luca a second time. Possibilites include:
A Diplomacy check of 5 makes possible a dialogue option that refusing to compromise will drive the
Tawenus' tribe into the arms of the Ruautai Deadfire Company.
Choosing the dialogue option that you're not willing to settle
things politely, followed by an Intimidate check of 5 or a Might check of 20.
Another pathway will earn Shady disposition. The Forged Contract is
in the chest at #5. You can undo the lock and have a character in
Stealth mode steal it. You could also use Sleight of Hand to pickpocket
Luca for Luca's Key if
your Mechanics skill isn't good enough, as the key will also open the
chest.
There is a shelf at #7. To make use of it for purposes of the Task
requires that you first speak to Luca about the contract, and learn of
the Forged Contract
without Tawenu. You won't have the needed options during the scripted
interaction with the shelf unless you first explored the relevant
dialogues with Luca.
As for the shelf itself, clicking on it with a character who is still
visible will prompt the nearby Clerk to warn you that the shelf is not
for outsiders. Having a character click on the shelf while in Stealth
mode sets up the needed scripted interaction. You can now switch out the
contract that Tawenu doesn't like, and leave the Forged
Contract in its place.
Speak to Luca again, and he'll notice that the only copy of the contract
on hand now leaves the Island in the possession of Tawenu's tribe.
The different set of options requires that you at least spoke to him beforehand
about the contract in the Headquarters, and making an Insight check of 3
to notice that he has wine stains on his shirt.
Options include:
Making a Bluff check of 2 and then bribing him with 300gp.
Telling him the contract is unjust, and then making either
Diplomacy checks of 3 and then 4, or a Streetwise check of 3.
Making either a Might check of 10 or an Intimidate check of 2,
then making either another Intimidate check of 3 or a Diplomacy
check of 5.
Buying him a drink for 12cp, and then performing a Sleight of Hand
check of 3 to take Luca's
Key without him noticing.
Outright killing him for Luca's
Key. Nobody else seems to mind, and there's apparently no
reputation loss involved.
Now you can go speak to Tawenua again to complete the Task. All
options result in a moderate gain of reputation with the Huana, and
include:
Saying that no payment is necessary, for another gain of
reputation with the Huana.
Selecting the dialogue option about teaching the Trading Company a
lesson means no payment, but an additional gain of reputation with
the Huana and another loss of reputation with the Trading Company.
Insulting the offer of gems by likening them to seashells means
you get the gems, but now an offsetting minor loss of reputation
with the Huana.
Insulting the offer that starts with "Is that all?" results in
getting the gems, an additional 45cp, and likewise an offsetting
minor loss of reputation with the Huana.
If you resolved the Task in a way that favored the Huana, you can now
go back inside the Headquarters and witness Luca getting fired from his
clerk job. But he can now be hired as a Crew
Member.
Another option that becomes available after speaking at length with
Luca about the contract is to indicate that you'll take his side. You
can then inform Tawenu that you'll leave the existing contract in place.
Doing so will result in a loss of reputation Tekehu.
You can then go back inside the Headquarters and inform Luca to get
rewarded with 1,700cp. This is the most profitable way of completing the
Task, and it will gain reputation with the Vailian Trading Company. But
it will also involve the loss of reputation with the Huana.
Completing the Task, however you do it, results in a representative of
the Royal Deadfire Company named Kaleil showing up and offering
employment on behalf of the Company.
