You'll start off at #1 on the map of the Poko Kohara Ruins. The Uncut Gem is at the base of the tree at #4.
Give the Uncut Gem to the Pool of Memories at #11 in the Temple of Toamowhai. In Defense of the Written Word becomes available as a new challenge in The Crucible.
Three sets of Research Notes will be in The Crucible. One each to your left and right, and one on the stage behind you. Several waves of Brine Imps and Nagas are going to show up, and each will prioritize destroying the Research Notes. If a set of Research Notes gets destroyed, it imposes a condition called "Archmage's Anger" on party members that continually inflicts Raw Damage until the end of the fight. And by end of the fight I mean all the way through any waves of Imps and Nagas that are left. And that condition stacks for increasing Raw Damage for each set of Research Notes that gets destroyed.
One approach is to make generous use of damaging spells with large areas-of-effect to keep the Research Notes intact for as long as possible to keep the Raw Damage from coming into play for as long as possible.
Another is to have resources that can keep you alive through the Raw Damage while inevitably letting the Research Notes get destroyed. That can mean LOTS of Potions of Healing and Scrolls of Healing, or combining regenerative abilities (e.g.,, Paladin's Exalted Endurance) with regenerative items. Another method is giving the Brilliant Inspiration (+5 Intellect, +1 Power Levels, +1 class resources every 6 sec), like from the Cipher's Ancestor's Memory power, to a Priest who has the Salvation of Time and Barring Death's Door spells. The Priest can gradually put Barring Death's Door on party members one by one, mixed in with Salvation of Time that will extend both Barring Death's Door and the Brilliant Inspiration. And the Brilliant Inspiration in turn replenishes the Priest's 6th-tier spell slot that had been spent casting Salvation of Time, meaning he or she can cast Salvation of Time endlessly. It's a self-sustaining cycle that you can keep going for the length of the battle.
