Baldur's Gate 2 Online Walkthrough by Montresor
SIR SARLES
If you are not a Cleric, or you are a Cleric of Neutral alignment, you get the quest from Guardian Telwyn at 1 in the Temple of Helm.
If you are a Cleric of Good alignment, you get the quest from Dawnbringer Sain at 4 in the Temple of Lathander.
If you are a Cleric of Evil alignment, you get the quest from Talon Yarryl at 2 in the Temple of Talos.
In all cases, the temple has learned that a famous sculptor, Sir Sarles, is in town. The temple has decided to ask him to create a piece of art for the temple. The problem is that the famous artist is rather picky about the medium he works in - he will only work in pure illithium. He is currently staying with the wealthy Jysstev family in the Government District. So ...
- Go to the Government District. You will find the Jysstev Estate at 12.
- When you enter the estate, the butler approaches you to ask you what you want. Tell him you're looking for Sarles. He corrects you, telling you that SIR Sarles is indeed here.
- Sir Sarles is at 3 in the estate. He tells you that he will only work in one medium, pure illithium. If you can't find it at an ore merchant or somesuch, he will just go back to enjoying his holiday.
Sir Sarles knows of an ore merchant in Waukeen's Promenade called Jerlia or something like that.
Some NPCs, including Korgan, will at this point suggest that you create an alloy looking like Illithium and try to pull a fast one on Sir Sarles.
- Go to Waukeen's Promenade. Jerlia will be at 12 during the daytime. Unfortunately she doesn't know where to find 200 pounds of illithium. She can deliver 50 pounds a year...
Jerlia offers you two suggestions, however: You can go directly to her source, or you can get her to create a cheaper alloy for you.
For telling you who her source is, Jerlia demands 1,000 GP. The source is a Duergar Dwarf named Unger Hilldark who is currently staying in the Copper Coronet.
For creating a "cheap" alloy, Jerlia demands 200 GP. She then leaves, promising to be back in 24 hours with the alloy.
You can in fact do both, getting both the real and fake illithium. I will describe both solutions below, starting with the honest solution.
The Honest Solution: Real Illithium
- Go to the Slums District and enter the Copper Coronet at 3. Unger Hilldark will be near the bar at 2.
- Unfortunately, Unger can't help you either. He doesn't have any illithium, it was stolen from him by a Hill Dwarf named Neb who is currently hiding in the Bridge District.
(You may remember Neb the child killer from Baldur's Gate. It's him.)
- Off to the Bridge District we go. Neb is hiding in the derelict house at 20. Before entering, you may want to ensure that you have the necessary means to see through invisibility and also to protect against level drains.
- Enter and confront Neb. He admits to being the illithium thief and child killer before drinking a potion of invisibility and siccing four Child Spirits on you. The spirits can drain levels.
- Try to keep True Seeing active and concentrate your attacks on Neb. Once he dies, the Child Spirits you haven't killed will be freed. You get 3,500 XP for killing Neb and another 2,500 XP for each Child Spirit you release.
Neb drops Neb's Head, 2 Potions of Invisibility, 3 Potions of Extra Healing, a Scroll of Protection from Cold, Neb's Nasty Cutter, and last but not least: 200 Pounds of Illithium.
Each of the Child Spirits drop a Pearl.
When Neb dies and the remaining Child Spirits are released, they cast Lesser Restoration on all party members, negating all level drains but also causing all party members to be fatigued.
- Since this may be the only time you'll enter Neb's house, take the time to loot it.
The painting at (x=290, y=310) is trapped. The trap can not be disarmed, so have a character with plenty of hit points open it! Behind it is a Scroll of Friends, 452 GP, and some minor treasure.
The remaining tables and bookshelves in the house contain only minor treasure.
- Before going back to Sir Sarles, go to the Council of Six building in the Government District and deliver Neb's Head to Chief Inspector Brega at 4. The party gains 2,500 GP and a Reputation increase of 1.
- Now go to the Jysstev Estate and speak to Sir Sarles again. The Party gains 21,750 XP.
- Return to the temple and speak with Guardian Telwyn, Dawnbringer Sain, or Talon Yarryl. You get back the 1,000 GP you gave out to Jerlia and 20,000 XP.
If you are a Cleric, you also get to choose one of the following items: The Ring of Holiness, the Armor or Faith, or the Staff-Spear.
If you are not a Cleric, you receive the Helm of Glory.
- Upon concluding the quest, you can now speak to Guardian Telwyn, Dawnbringer Sain, or Talon Yarryl again to get the Ring of Lathander quest.
The Dishonest Solution: A Cheap Alloy
- After agreeing with Jerlia, leave and find something useful to do for 24 hours. (Suggestion: Go after the real illithium; it can be used to upgrade the Mace of Disruption +1.)
- When 24 hours have passed, Jerlia will be back at 12 in Waukeen's Promenade.
- Trouble is, she has been approached by a couple of other churches and the price for the Fake Illithium is now 500 GP. You don't have a choice so just pay up.
- Go back to the Government District, enter the Jysslev Estate, and speak to Sir Sarles. Give him the Fake Illithium.
NOTE: If you speak to Sir Sarles with both the Real and Fake Illithium in your possession, he takes the real stuff. If you want to cheat him and keep the real illithium, drop it on the ground before speaking to Sir Sarles, then pick it up again afterwards. Otherwise he takes the Real Illithium and you are left with 200 pounds of useless Fake Illithium.
- Unfortunately, Sir Sarles is not as big a fool as you thought he was. He realizes the illithium is false and stomps out! Make sure to keep the Fake Illithium!
- Go back to the temple and report your failure to Guardian Telwyn, Dawnbringer Sain, or Talon Yarryl. All three will be rather displeased but High Watcher Oisig, High Mornmaster Arval, or Stormherald Nallabir will think the fake illithium is the piece of art they wanted. The party gains 10,000 XP.
If you are a Cleric working for the one of the temples, you also get to choose one of the following items: The Ring of Holiness, the Armor or Faith, or the Staff-Spear.
- Upon concluding the quest, you can now speak to Guardian Telwyn, Dawnbringer Sain, or Talon Yarryl again to get the Ring of Lathander quest.
