THE DECK OF MANY THINGS
This item, which you can loot from Aesgareth at 35 on the Maze level of Watcher's Keep, deserves a page on its own; if only because the Item Description is rather long.
I haven't experimented extensively with the Deck of Many Things so this description is mainly taken from Dave Milward's excellent walkthrough which is available from Sorcerer's Place. Dave Milward in his turn quotes Setsuna Mei'Oh whose original link is unfortunately no longer active.
You can make three draws from the deck. Which cards are available on later draws depends on whether or not you have made a "Bad" draw in a previous draw.
Of course this is a good time to create a savegame! :-)
First Draw
Bad draws:
- Donjon: User must save vs. Death at -4 penalty or be imprisoned.
- Ruin: Party loses all gold.
Good draws:
- Euryale: Permanent -1 penalty to all saving throws, with no save allowed. (*This* is a Good draw?)
- Flames: A Balor and four Fire Elementals attack the party.
- Gem: The party gets a Rogue Stone, a King's Tears, a Star Sapphire, a Diamond, and an Emerald.
- Jester: User receives 50,000 XP.
Second Draw (First Draw was a "Bad" Draw)
Bad draws:
- Void: User must save vs. death at -4 penalty or be disintegrated.
Good draws:
- Key: Party receives a Ring of Protection +3.
- Star: User gets +1 to one stat depending on his or her class. If the user is multi-class, the spellcasting class is favored.
- Vizier: User is under the effect of the Mantle spell for 24 hours.
- Rogue: User is Dire Charmed and attacks the rest of the party. Since this cannot be dispelled, you must kill the user and bring them back to life.
- Sun: The party receives 300,000 XP.
Second Draw (First Draw was a "Good" Draw)
Bad draws:
- Void: User must save vs. death at -4 penalty or be disintegrated.
- Magician: User is turned into a rabbit. Can be undone with Remove Curse.
Good draws:
- Knight: Four Demon Knights attack the party.
- Rogue: The user is Dire Charmed and attacks the rest of the party. Since this cannot be dispelled, you must kill the user and bring them back to life.
- Vizier: The user is under the effect of the Mantle spell for 24 hours.
- Sun: The party receives 300,000 XP.
Third Draw (No "Bad" Draws Beforehand)
- Skull: A powerful Death Shade turns up and attacks the user. If the user dies, the shade disappears.
- Moon: The user gets +10 Hit Points.
- Talon: The user is permanently blinded until cured by Remove Curse.
- Fool: The user's Wisdom is set to 3 and user is Confused. Dispel Magic fixes the confusion; Remove Curse fixes the Wisdom.
- Comet: User gains permanent +5% to Fire Resistance.
- Erinyes: User gains +1 to all stats for 24 hours.
Third Draw (At Least One "Bad" Draw Beforehand)
- Skull: A powerful Death Shade turns up and attacks the user. If the user dies, the shade disappears.
- Moon: The user gets +10 Hit Points.
- Fool: The user's Wisdom is set to 3 and user is Confused. Dispel Magic fixes the confusion; Remove Curse fixes the Wisdom.
- Throne: The party receives 1,000,000 XP.
