THE ASYLUM DUNGEON, LEVEL 1

After Irenicus has stolen your divine soul, he orders Bodhi to kill you. However, Bodhi wants to play a bit with her prey before killing it, and so she throws you in the old Asylum Dungeon. She explains to you that the place was meant as a test to see if inmates were sane. Now let's see if you can find your way out, before Bodhi finds you!

  1. This is where you start your dungeon crawl. All your party members are here, except of course Yoshimo if you brought him to the Asylum, and so is Imoen who can now join you again.

Don't worry; any NPC you leave behind will be able to find their way safely back to Athkatla. Apparently only you and your party will have to fight your way out. ;-)

  2. Here is an exit to Level 2 of the Asylum Dungeon.

  3. A container at (x=1220, y=1020) holds a Heavy Crossbow, 40 Bolts, 40 Bolts +1, and a Star Sapphire.

  4. In this room you will have to fight a few Gibberlings and Mutated Gibberlings.

    The rolled up carpet at (x=1520, y=890) contains a Ruby Stone, 548 GP, a lot of Bullets, 40 Bullets +1, 40 Bullets +2, and a Spear +3.

The barrel at (x=1510, y=830) contains 210 GP, a Composite Bow, 20 Arrows, 40 Arrows +1, and a lot of Throwing Axes and Throwing Daggers.

  5. In this room you will find a chest with a number of items and the Warden's Note. Here are also a number of statues with riddles written on them. Your task is to place the items in the corresponding statues.

Taken from the leftmost statue and moving in a clockwise direction, the riddles and the corresponding items are:

    • "Here, in this place, you swallow me. Yet, were I more, I could swallow you."
      – Jar of Water.

    • "Two brothers we are, great burdens we bear, all day we are bitterly pressed; Yet this will I say – we are full all day, and empty when we go to rest."
      – Worn Out Boots.

    • "No beginning. No end. I am a symbol of the world's cycles."
      – Golden Circlet.

    • "At night I come without being fetched, at day I am gone without being stolen."
      – Star Medallion.

    • "Try to defeat me but try in vain. When I win I end your pain."
      – Grinning Skull.

    • "I have two heads but one body. The more I stand still, the faster I run."
      – Hourglass.

    • "Always do I tell the truth, yet cannot speak. Look to me and see what really is."
      – Mirror.

    • "Name me and so you shall break me."
      – The Gagged Man.

    • "I will save your life, yet you can die by me. I will settle disputes yet not with words."
      – Sword Medallion.

    • "To those within the dungeon I am joy. To those fully beneath my gaze, I can be hell."
      – Sun Medallion.

    • "I have seen mountains rise. I have seen the fall of Netheril. You shall die but still shall I march on."
      – Sundial.

When you have placed all items correctly, the chest will contain a Sapphire Stone and a Dusty Rose Ioun Stone.

  6. Here is a Rukh and a number of different Mephits. The Rukh will try to cast Cloudkill.

Click the portal with the Ruby Stone (found at 4) to release a Pit Fiend (9,000 XP, need +3 weapons to hit).

Click the portal with the Sapphire Stone found at 5) to release a Genie who gives you the Doomplate +3 armor.

Click the portal with the Opal Stone (found at 10) to release a Greater Wolfwere (15,000 XP, need +3 weapons to hit).

  7. Here is another set of riddles for you to answer. Click each of the 12 faces where the cursor turns into a double arrow to be transported into the middle of the room and be asked a riddle. The right answer sets you free. If you get a riddle wrong, the statue casts a spell on whichever NPC was asked the riddle.

The riddles and the answers; first the leftmost faces, then the rightmost, from bottom to top:

    • "Lighter than what I am made of, more of me is hidden than is seen. I am the bane of the mariner, a tooth within the see. Speak my name."
      – Ice.

    • "A spirited jig it dances bright, banishing all but darkest night. Give it food and it will live; give it water and it will die."
      – Fire.

    • "The man who invented it, doesn't want it for himself. The man who bought it, doesn't need it for himself. The man who needs it, doesn't know it when he needs it."
      – A coffin.

    • "The life I lead is mere hours or less, I serve all my time by being consumed. I am quickest when thin, slowest when fat, and wind is the bane of the gift that I bring."
      – A candle.

    • "The more that there is, the less that you see. Squint all you wish when surrounded by me."
      – Darkness.

    • "They come to witness the night without being called, a sailor's guide and a poet's tears. They are lost to sight each day without the hand of a thief."
      – Stars.

    • "They follow and lead, but only as you pass. Dress yourself in darkest black, and they are darker still. Always they flee the light, though without the sun there would be none."
      – Shadows.

    • "I have holes throughout, from back to front and top to bottom to core. More nothing that something within, and yet I hold water."
      – A sponge.

    • "I am free for the taking through all of your life, though given but once at birth. I am less than nothing in weight, but will fell the strongest of you if held."
      – Breath.

    • "Alive as you but without breath, as cold in my life as in my death; never a thirst though always I drink, dressed in mail but never a clink."
      – Fish. (Somebody's been reading The Hobbit!:-))

    • "Of all your possessions, I am the hardest to guard. If you have me, you will want to share me. If you share me, you no longer have me."
      – A secret.

    • "I can have no color, though there may be darkness within. I have no weight and hold nothing, and if placed in a container, it becomes all the lighter."
      – A hole.

For answering all riddles correctly, each party member receives 5,000 XP and you also get a Ring of Regeneration.

  8. Here is a Yuan-Ti war party waiting for you. Prepare beforehand, you don't want your party to run around confused in this place! Try to tear down the Mage's defenses and get rid of him as soon as possible.

  9. DO NOT ENTER HERE! Here is a trap that cannot be disarmed and is always lethal. This is why you want to avoid Confusion or Fear being cast on your party members. (In fact, this is why you may want to cast Confusion or Fear on the Yuan-Ti instead.;-)

  10. Here you will have to fight a Clay Golem (remember: Blunt magical weapons).

The trapped barrel at (x=2480, y=780) contains a Bag of Holding, 40 Darts of Wounding, 40 Darts of Stunning, and 80 Darts.

The barrel at (x=2660, y=810) contains an Opal Stone, a Rogue Stone, a Scroll of Prismatic Spray, 40 Arrows of Piercing, 40 Arrows +2, 40 Bolts of Biting, 40 Bolts +2, 240 Arrows, and 160 Bolts.

  11. Here is another exit to Level 2 of the Asylum Dungeon.

  12. Here is a war party waiting for you. Depending on your level it can be a few Minotaurs, a Yuan-Ti party, or a Minotaur and four Umber Hulks.

The pot at (x=890, y=2000) contains Scrolls of Project Image and Delayed Blast Fireball, a few Darts, and some minor treasure.

  13. Here is the entrance to Level 3 of the Asylum Dungeon. However the statue will not open its mouth and let you pass until you have The Hand of Dace (found at 9 on Level 2 of the Dungeon) and Kurtulmak's Crystal Shard (found at 4 on Level 2).

Each party member gets 29,500 XP for opening the gate.
