This is a video-based walkthrough for the NWN2 adventure pack, Mysteries of Westgate, developed and released by Ossian Studios. Please be advised that older versions of Mysteries of Westgate needed to be validated with a link provided by Atari. That link is no longer available. The only way to play Mysteries of Westgate now is to purchase NWN2 Complete from GOG.com.
There are a number of reasons for this newest guide. In addition to complete solutions that I've written for games, like Temple of Elemental Evil for example, I have sometimes written game guides from a much more subjective viewpoint, like the ones I've written for BG2 and IWD2. It affords me an opportunity to explain in considerable detail the kind of analysis, preparation, and decision making that can produce a successful campaign. I have occasionally received requests to return to that style of writing, and thus have endeavoured to write a similar guide for NWN2.
The second reason is that my appreciation and understanding of NWN2 have evolved since I wrote the Sorcerer's Place Walkthrough. I now feel I have greater insights to offer on playing it.
Thirdly, I'm an avid user of Youtube, and frequently upload videos of my gameplay. I was struck by the idea of integrating some of those videos into game guides, with the earlier version of a Dragon Age: Origins walkthrough being my first one. The guide is embedded with my Youtube videos, with those videos accompanied by my explanations of what is going on and what decisions I am making.
Now before we begin in earnest, the same guidelines that I presented during the OC part of the video-based guide on use and develop your characters and equipping your characters still hold true to a large degree. There are a few significant differences. In that respect, I have some new guidelines to offer that are specific to Mysteries of Westgate.
There are only three joinable party members available. They are:
As for the evil playthrough, I wanted to build a character that was particularly well-suited to take advantage of the benefits offered by becoming a Vampire. My concept was Selene, an Elven Assassin. At a certain point, the only companion left to her will be an evil version of Mantides.
The highest level any party can reach in MoW is 15th, assuming the party grabs every opportunity for available xp. That means only three more feats to choose, unless the character's class offers bonus feats like for Mantides and Rinara. That also means only one chance to add +1 to an attribute. Make sure that it somehow results in a meaningful improvement after it results in an increase to an even number.
Item crafting still uses the same recipes as for the OC. However, both the gemstones and the essences needed for the recipes are quite rare in MoW. And even with what you can find, often only the lower end recipes are possible (e.g. +1 or +2). That means you need to be selective about when you use your rare essences and gems for crafting. My crafting was limited to adding +2d6 damage vs. evil for two weapons, adding +1d6 fire damage to another weapon, and adding a +3 enhancement bonus to one of the weapons as well.
That also means that I'll have to buy a lot of the items you may want. Some of them can be quite expensive, and really add up. Worry not. There's a Lizardfolk Witch in the Undergate who will pay full value (even over and above 25,000gp for example) for expensive items I'm willing to sell. And she never runs out of gold. That means I can really cash out big time, and pretty much buy whatever I want for myself (in combination with a significant appraise skill for my protagonist that is).
As previously mentioned, I sometimes show videos with an evil way of doing things with a different protagonist. Those videos are also older, and I also feel I can improve greatly on my previous evil playthrough, so those videos are only intended to be used on an interim basis. I intend to do an evil playthrough of this game at some point in the future and update the guide accordingly.
All the maps in this solution are screen captures. Large, numbered maps, are provided on top of the relevant pages, and sometimes throughout the text as well. When you see a smaller map, simply click on the thumbnail of the map to see the full version. You’ll notice that my walkthrough provides notes in numeric order on most of the pages. The numbers on my maps correspond with the location of what is being discussed in my walkthrough notes.
I've submitted past walkthroughs to Sorcerer's Place as Dave Milward. My alias here, however, is Beren. If there's anything you'd like to share with me, by all means you're welcome to send me an e-mail to beren or contact me via PM on the SP message boards. If I find anything particularly helpful and worth mentioning specifically, I'll give credit where credit is due in updates.
And without further ado, the adventure begins with Salazar gathering his party.
