ABOUT THE WALKTHROUGH

This is not intended as a complete walkthrough of the Mask of the Betrayer expansion in the sense that it doesn't explore every possible avenue, or reveal where every single item can be found. Plenty of walkthroughs, including mine that is already on here at Sorcerer's Place, do that.

There are a number of reasons for this newest guide. In addition to complete solutions that I've written for games, like Temple of Elemental Evil for example, I have sometimes written game guides from a much more subjective viewpoint, like the ones I've written for BG2 and IWD2. It affords me an opportunity to explain in considerable detail the kind of analysis, preparation, and decision making that can produce a successful campaign. I have occasionally received requests to return to that style of writing, and thus have endeavoured to write a similar guide for NWN2.

The second reason is that my appreciation and understanding of NWN2 have evolved since I wrote the Sorcerer's Place Walkthrough for the expansion. I now feel I have greater insights to offer on playing it.

Thirdly, I'm an avid user of Youtube, and frequently upload videos of my gameplay. I was struck by the idea of integrating some of those videos into game guides, with the earlier version of a Dragon Age: Origins walkthrough being my first one. The guide is embedded with my Youtube videos, with those videos accompanied by my explanations of what is going on and what decisions I am making.

Now before we begin in earnest, the same guidelines that I presented during the OC part of the video-based guide on using and developing characters and equipping your characters still hold true. The only real differences are ones of degree, the monsters are tougher, the item bonuses are larger, and so on.

Nonetheless, I have some new guidelines to offer. One is some principles on for building epic characters.

Also, the expansion adds a new dimension of game play that is also integral to the story itself, the Spirit Eater Curse. See my guidelines on the powers of the Spirit Eater for insights on how to manage and ultimately survive the curse.

Furthermore, the item enchantment system is different during Mask of the Betrayer. See this link for a very good guide on the enchanting system. On that note, you'll need certain spells for certain enchantments. Spells that you may need include:

If you want a certain spell and don't have it yet, be sure to get that spell, even if it's a lower level spell and you have to get it during one of your level ups. Spell scrolls are pretty scarce in Mask of the Betrayer. *Note* I also make a point of making sure I get the Flesh to Stone spell during a level-up, the reason being that it will become crucial to my plan of obtaining all nine of the Slumbering Coven Essences.

The expansion sees a new adventure for my original Knight Captain Character, Valeria, an Elven Arcane Trickster / Swashbuckler who has become cursed as a Spirit Eater. Note that I also sometimes show videos on more evil pathways in the game, using an evil Cleric / Blackguard that I had created named Zarathos.

I also provide detailed profiles on the new joinable companions in the expansion, along with plenty of advice on how to develop and use them effectively. They are:

ABOUT THE MAPS

All the maps in this solution are screen captures. Large, numbered maps, are provided on top of the relevant pages, and sometimes throughout the text as well. When you see a smaller map, simply click on the thumbnail of the map to see the full version. You’ll notice that my walkthrough provides notes in numeric order on most of the pages. The numbers on my maps correspond with the location of what is being discussed in my walkthrough notes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’ve submitted past walkthroughs to Sorcerer’s Place as Dave Milward. My alias here, however, is Beren. If there’s anything you’d like to share with me, by all means you’re welcome to send me an e-mail to beren or contact me via PM on the SP message boards. If I find anything particularly helpful and worth mentioning specifically, I’ll give credit where credit is due in updates.

And without further ado, the adventure begins in a barrow in the faraway land of Rashemen.
