Video-Based Walkthrough for NWN2: Mysteries of Westgate
Mantides, M NG Human Fighter 8
Mantides packs a two-handed sword with extra damage against evil monsters. He becomes a Paladin in the good version of the walkthrough, where his role is clearly that of a Damage Dealer. I will show an alternative path for Mantides when I complete an evil walkthrough of the adventure pack.
Stats
- Str 17
- Dex 14
- Con 14
- Int 10
- Wis 12
- Cha 14
His Strength will change to 15 and his Charisma will change to 16 after he becomes a Paladin towards the end of the game.
I added +1 Charisma with the intention of it merging with the Nymph Cloak +3. Not sure if that +1 Charisma carried over to when Mantides changes to a Paladin though.
Skills
Mantides starts off emphasizing:
- Intimidate
- Lore
- Parry
- Taunt
But the game changes his skill distribution to emphasize Concentration, Diplomacy and Parry after he becomes a Paladin.
Feats
Starting Feats: Combat Expertise
Cleave
Great Cleave
Knockdown
Mobility
Weapon Focus (Greatsword)
Weapon Specialization (Greatsword)
9th level: Skill Focus (Armor) - Mantides' feats are going to change once he becomes a Paladin, so I select feats on the basis of present expediency. The potential idea that I had in mind was to sometimes craft armors for profit, although I never got around to it.
10th level: Improved Critical (Greatsword) - Improves Mantides' chances of landing critical hits, which will certainly be useful during a lot of fights in MoW.
11th level: No feat selected.
12th level: Greater Weapon Focus (Greatsword) - It's all about enhancing Mantides' prowess with his Greatsword.
Greater Weapon Specialization (Greatsword) - And his damage as well.
13th level: No feat selected.
14th level: Blind-Fight - Allows Mantides a second chance of hitting a concealed opponent or striking again if he himself is blinded.
15th level: Power Critical (Greatsword) - This would be a great choice if I take the evil choice and Mantides becomes a Champion of Shar instead. It wouldn't really matter when I'm taking the good path, since by then Mantides is very close to becoming a Paladin and having an altogether different set of feats. In fact ...
Mantides' feats once he becomes a Paladin become as follows:
- Cleave
- Divine Might
- Extra Smite
- Extra Turning
- Great Cleave
- Luck of Heroes
- Power Attack
Inventory
- Primary Weapon: Dawnbringer (Greatsword +3, +5 vs. evil, 24 spell resistance, Dispel Magic DC=20, +2d4 damage vs. evil, Protection from Evil without limit, Paladins only) - Awarded by Lathander to Mantides after he wins his duel against Sir Peregrim in the Human Cattle Factory. Its power and utility in the hands of a Paladin is obvious.
- Helmet: Paladin Helmet (+1 Concentration) - Purchased from the Armorer in the Market Triangle. Magical helmets in MoW are scarce, so I guess this is as much a thematic choice as anything else.
- Amulet of Natural Armor +1 - Purchased from Mintassan. Every little bit helps. Even so, Charissa and Rinara are ahead in line for the Amulets of Natural Armor +2.
- Armor: Mantides' Full Plate (Full Plate +3, Heal (11) 1 / day) - Awarded by Lathander to Mantides after he wins his duel against Sir Peregrim in the Human Cattle Factory. Obviously the best possible armor for Mantides, as there is no other Full Plate of +3 or better enhancement available. The ability to use Heal once a day is sugar on top.
- Cloak: Nymph Cloak +3 (+3 Charisma) - A reward from Gracie after completing the Tortured Hearts quest. It will enhance his powers as a Paladin when he becomes one.
- Gloves: Bracers of Bruising (+3 Strength, +3 Intimidate) - Looted from Viglor at the conclusion of the Rinara's Stash quest. The +3 Strength will mesh with his 17 Strength as a Fighter or later on his 15 Strength as a Paladin. Strength is crucial for any Damage Dealer character.
- 1st Ring: Ring of Protection +2 - Looted from Falucca Ardarbrent during The Tyrran Enclave quest. Mantides' source of a deflection bonus to armor class.
- 2nd Ring: Malchor's Punch (Knockdown) - Looted from the Duergar High Priestess during the Knot of Shou Lung quest. Gives him the option of knocking down his target for a round.
- Belt: Greater Swordsman's Girdle (slashing 20/-) - Looted from the Deurgar High Priestess during the Knot of Shou Lung quest. Could be a random drop though. Mantides is a Damage Dealer instead of a Tank, so it makes sense to prioritize him for an item that provides hefty damage reduction since his armor class won't be as good as Charissa's. It is often advisable to recognize that a Damage Dealer will be struck more often, and therefore to emphasize damage reduction instead of armor class. Furthermore, he'll get his Strength boost from the Bracers of Bruising. Had I not gotten this, I would have went with the Swordsman's Girdle (slashing 5/-) found at the Bent Mermaid Inn.
- Boots: Boots of Striding +2 - Looted from Dallia Urdo at the conclusion of the Okuzo's Honor quest. Boots of Hardiness, or the resources to make them, are comparatively rare, so I prefer to save those kinds of boots for characters who will spend more time on the front lines. And so Mantides, who often hits from the flank after Charissa and Rinara take up front-line positions, wears Boots of Striding which will give him a small increase in his hit points.
