SPIDER WOOD

Red Wizards

I briefly return to the Larswood, and then hit its east edge in order to travel to the Spider Wood.

Just east, and towards the center, will be a conclave of Red Wizards who will go hostile on the good party. I could start the dialogue with their leader, Denak, if I wanted to. Problem is, they'll all start off with their protections in an instant. Those protections will include Minor Globes of Invulnerability, which will protect them against my crowd-control spells. What makes matters worse is that Denak will try to hit the party right away with a Chaos spell.

So I decide to hit the Wizards with my crowd-control spells from beyond the fog of war and dispense with any dialogue. The beauty of crowd-control spells against multiple spellcasters is that it can prevent them from getting off any spells at all.

*Evil* When Edwin is in my evil party, the Red Wizards recognize him as a comrade and then walk away without any fighting.

Fahrington's Scroll

Now I journey towards the northwest corner of the area. I encounter an Elf named Fahrington. He promises to reward me if I retrieve a scroll of wisdom for him that was stolen by nearby Ettercaps.

The Ettercaps will be due east. My party is high-level enough and decently equipped such that I can take them with routine physical force. One of them leaves behind what's actually a Cursed Scroll of Foolishness.

I bring the scroll back to Fahrington, who 'kindly' lets me keep it. But hey, I get 300xp for my troubles.

Spiders and Webs

Now I go back east. Imoen activates her artifact to raise her Dexterity, and thus her thieving skills as well. She then gulps a Potion of Invisibility. She then does the rounds, disarming the web traps. There was a third, but that didn't really matter.

She then marks the location of a large group of Spiders. She gets in first blow with a Fireball, and then regroups with the party. She then gets in another Fireball as they begin to approach. The point behind offensive spells is often not so much to kill outright, but to soften up for quicker killing by the fighters. Note also that when Avastrian looks to get surrounded, he protects himself with Mirror Image. Imoen helps matters along by pecking individual Spiders with Magic Missiles.

The video concludes with Imoen disarming the third web trap.

Next up is Wyrm's Crossing, the entrance to Baldur's Gate.
