Samargol

Captain Dajos

I am brought to the front gate of the city of Samargol, where I am interrogated by Captain Dajos. Lady Sa'Sani intervenes and secures my release.

Lady Sa'Sani

Just a little ahead and to the right will be Lady Sa'Sani speaking with Volo and Na'Sarin. She then has a job for me, to investigate the ship wreck on her behalf.

She also gives me 2,000gp to get started.

Umoja

And here is where I have Umoja and his pet dinosaur, Yushai, join my party.

Openpalm Bazaar

There are a number of merchants available. One is Irim Mendar, and another is Vadin'ya. Irim pays better prices, but also sells at higher prices. Vadin'ya pays less for what I sell, but also sells for lower. And so, when it comes to basic equipment, I'll buy from Vadin'ya and sell what I don't need to Irim.

As far as basic equipment goes, I get Heavy Shields for both Janette and Umoja. I get a Falchion for Logan. I sell anything I don't need to Vadin'ya.

The only unique item I buy for now is Gloves of Swordplay (+3 Parry), which I buy from Vadin'ya, for Gallard. The gloves fit into his build, which emphasizes both a high Parry skill and a high armor class. Vadin'ya also has some quests available, but that is for later.

Irim Mendar also sells the Helm of the Watchman (+8 Listen, +8 Spot, +8 Search), which I would like for Umoja. But I can't afford it for the time being.

Another merchant named Kwesi also has crafting items for sale, and also offers bounty quests, but I save that for later as well.

Crafting Stations

Now I check out the nearby Crafting Stations. Crafting in Storm of Zehir works differently, and I'll explain how later when I get the chance.

For now, a Trunk has several recipes. The only ones I grab are the ones for Full Plate, Large Shield, Tower Shield, Darts, and Bullets. I anticipate the first three recipes to produce items for my party's warriors. The latter two are if I need to produce ammunition for Umoja.

Now I make for the gate that leads to the Overland Map.

5th Level

I only need a little more experience to get my core party members to their 5th level. The first fight involves some lowly Kobolds. They're already in a battle with a Samarchan Patrol, so I have the option of joining in. Keep in mind that fights where the patrol is already involved are easier, but you get less experience afterwards as well.

Next I fight some more Kobolds, this time by themselves. They're easier to kill, and this time I get the full xp reward for killing them off.

Next up is a pair of Ogres. Here is where I start to show a standard method. Gallard issues a 'stand your ground' command, puts himself ahead of the rest, waits for the monsters to approach, and then issues an 'attack nearest' command. The idea is to set the battle position so that Gallard absorbs the brunt of the onslaught, and let the other party members bring up the cavalry. It's not foolproof. When an Ogre does connect, it can really hurt. I made a judgment call to let the battle play out in spite of Gallard getting pretty close to dying.

Now my four core party members have enough xp to go up another level. I return to the Openpalm Bazaar to level.

Adjacent to the Bazaar will be the Leira's Trick Tavern. The first night spent in the Leira's Trick will be free. Every one after that will cost 50gp. And thus, the point all along was to get to the next level of experience first before using up my first free night.

Umoja's 5th Level

I continue to hunt around for more experience, although I don't show all of it in the video. Due east from Samargol will be a gravesite that yields a Ring of Fortitude +1. Gallard wears it as an interim ring.

The video concludes with me killing some Giant Spiders, and Umoja getting enough xp to get to his 5th level.

Charm Peddler

I begin with a fight against some Giant Spiders. Two of them drop Giant Spider Venom Sacs, which I hold onto in order to fulfill a bounty quest later on.

Umoja takes the time to reconfigure his spells so that he now has multiple instances of Bark Skin and two instances of Call Lightning. A fight against some Gnolls soon ensues.

Sometimes special Overland Map encounters can appear at random locations and times. These special encounters will be surrounded by a blue circle isntead of the usual red one as with hostile mosnters. I found one such special encounter a little east of Samargol, the Charm Peddler. All it takes is a Spellcraft and an Appraise check to realize he has nothing worth buying.

The video concludes with a fight against several Orcs battling a patrol. Umoja makes things easier by blasting everything with a well-placed Call Lightning.

My next destination is Omgar's Teeth.
