The War Begins
Callum Falls
I return to Crossroad Keep, whereupon I'm informed that a Shadow Reaver is in pursuit of Commander Callum. I bring along Casavir, Khelgar, and Zhjaeve. Ammon Jerro is also an obligatory party member in this instance.
The party arrives at a roadway leading from Highcliff. Commander Callum is putting up a valiant fight against the Blade Golems of the Shadow Reaver, but he is doomed.
I then start the fight, which will include the Shadow Reaver as well as several Blade Golems, each of which can inflict a specific type of bonus damage (e.g. cold, fire, etc.). Valeria casts an Extended Greater Invisibility on herself, while Casavir activates Divine Might. Khelgar Construct charges right in. Zhjaeve casts an Extended Battle Tide, and then hits the Golems with a Word of Faith spell, which blinds them. Ammon Jerro hangs back and lets the party charge in and take out the Golems. He is content to belt the Golems over and over again with his Vitriolic Acid / Eldritch Chain combo.
The Golems are soon disposed of, leaving only the Shadow Reaver itself. Ammon Jerro continues to keep his distance so that he can safely use his True Name Scroll on the Reaver. It soon falls as well. Sir Nevalle then arrives to learn the bad news.
I get the Tome of Iltakazar in my inventory automatically upon defeating the Shadow Reaver. The Shadow Reaver leaves behind two more items as well.
One is The Golem's Blade (Greatsword +3, +3 Strength, +1d6 slashing damage, +2d6 massive critical). The other is another Ring of Power (Freedom of Movement, +15 cold resistance, +15 electrical resistance, +15 fire resistance, +1 regeneration). This will be Zhjaeve's ring for the rest of the game, providing her with both Freedom of Movement and elemental resistances.
Speaking with Casavir
Here I have Valeria speak with Casavir, simply to provide some context for the romantic encounter that will occur afterwards. I need to make an influence check with him to be fully forthcoming about why he left Neverwinter's service. I also get another +1 influence with him by choosing the good-aligned response as to their actions at Old Owl Well.
Tome of Iltkazar
I head back to Crossroad Keep, and check in with Lieutenant Kana. Keep Time is now at 95%.
I get 500xp for bringing the Tome of Iltkazar to Aldanon. Grobnar, Qara and Sand now appear in the same room as Aldanon, and add their two cents worth as well. I also speak with Grobnar at this point. He provides the same dialogue that he would have had he been with me when I took down the Shadow Reaver. That dialogue hints that he can use the Tome to empower the Construct.
I leave and re-enter the Keep, and check in with Kana again. Keep Time is now at 97%.
I go the Basement and speak with Grobnar again. He uses the Tome so that the Construct gains permanent bonuses of +2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, and +2 Constitution.
The First Battle
First, I run the Keep Time to 100%. I won't get another chance after the war starts in earnest. I did not too badly. Perhaps not as good as some of the hardcore approaches I've mentioned, but it served my purposes.
Next, I speak to Sir Nevalle and inform him that I'm ready for the war. What follows is a cutscene whereby Neverwinter's Greycloak troops are driven back by the undead of the King of Shadows, and forced to fall back to Crossroad Keep.
Strangely enough, I am forced to side track myself to Shandra Jerro's Farm.
