This is your starting point once the battle against the forces of Arl Howe begins. A nearby chest will hold a few mundane weapons and armor.
Come here to find your mother, Eleanor Cousland. She'll give you a Key to open a nearby treasury. She'll also become a companion in your party. The chest inside has a random item or two.
Here you'll come across groups of Howe Soldiers who will attack you. If the Mabari War Hound is with you, make sure to flank your opponents whenever possible in order to maximize the number of hits you land.
Here is where you'll find a few Howe Soldiers attacking a servant. The servant will declare the castle fallen and flee.
Here you will find Ser Gilmore trying to hold the main hall against further penetration by Arl Howe's soldiers. A group of them will burst in, along with a Howe Mage. Try to surround and take out the Mage first, since she can easily wear down low-level parties at a distance with repeated shots from her staff. Then mop up the others.
Here you'll have to fight more Howe Soldiers, as well as a couple of Mabari Hounds, led by a Howe Knight that packs a maul. Remember, flank whenever you can, and don't be skimpy with your healing poultices.
Here you find your father, Bryce Cousland, gravely wounded. Your mother becomes determined to stand by his side, even in death. Duncan in the meantime arrives, and offers you a place with the Grey Wardens and a chance to escape the invasion of Arl Howe's forces. This brings you to Ostagar.

"Hmph. Being around this group too long is sort of like having the Calimshite itch, isn't it? Except for the uncomfortable burning sensation. And the rash. But still." -Jan Jansen, Baldur's Gate II
