FRIENDLY ARM INN

To the Friendly Arm

Now I go east to the Coast Way (which I'll explore more fully later on). I run into Elminster and have a dialogue where the choices won't particularly matter when it comes to long term consequences.

I continue east and run into 2 packs of Diseased Gibberlings. Avastrian waits until both packs have closed in before carefully placing his Sleep spell.

I continue north and speak briefly with a Ranger named Aoln.

I continue on to reach the area with the Friendly Arm Inn. The video concludes with me venturing a little east and using the 'tab' key to find the Ring of Wizardry (doubles the number of 1st level Wizard spells memorized), which Avastrian now wears.

Tarnesh

The party progresses towards the inner courtyard, and then the steps leading to the Inn itself. I soon get attacked by a Mage named Tarnesh. Tarnesh can be a dangerous battle for 1st-level parties, and his spellcasting sequence gets refined in SCS1. His Mirror Images come up right away. Then he'll start with Sleep, then Horror, and then single-target spells like Melf's Acid Arrow and Magic Missiles. This sequence can lead to an early end for your protagonist. This is why I recommend bringing along Montaron and Xzar along, even if temporarily. Montaron lends an extra blade, and Xzar can cast Larloch's Minor Drain. This provides both a faster bringing down of Tarnesh's Mirror Images, and greater chances of hitting Tarnesh himself instead of his Mirror Images. Fortunately, the latter played out as I managed to interrupt his casting of Sleep and send him into panic mode. I follow him inside and finish him off.

He leaves behind a few spell scrolls as well as a bounty letter. Imoen begins her personal quest by picking up his spellbook out of curiosity.

Jaheira and Khalid

This video is simply one of my speaking to Jaheira and Khalid into my party, and then setting their proficiencies. I also make a couple of equipment purchases, an extra Dagger and a Small Shield for Jaheira.

Joia's Flamedance Ring

Oops, gotta get Khalid a Medium Shield to go with his interim Bastard Sword first. I then go to the house just left of the entry gate. Joia wants me to get her Flamedance Ring back from the Hobgoblins.

I then scout the perimeter of the area in search of any Hobgoblins to kill. Note how I often 'bump' the edge of the map but then stay where I am. This serves to expose new areas on the world map, even if I don't intend to go there just yet.

The Hobgoblins come in small enough groups that I feel I can chance killing them without using Sleep, at least most of the time. Note how, whenever a party member is wounded, I have the party member retreat. The monster will initially still go for my party member, but can be convinced to change targets when the other party members obstruct his path and continue to attack him.

It's the Hobgoblins on the north edge of the area that have Joia's Flamedance Ring. I bring the ring back to her for gold, xp, and a +1 to reputation.

Landrin

Now I head back to the Inn itself and go up two flights of stairs. The chests here are hard to pick, and even if I could, it would only result in Flaming Fist Enforcers being sent after me. On the third floor is a Gnome named Landrin, who wants some spiders cleared out of her house in Beregost. She also offers bonuses if I bring back her boots and wine.

I will soon be going back to the Coast Way.
