COAST WAY

Unshey's Girdle

I go down to the second level of the Inn and speak with a Dwarf named Unshey. She wants her girdle back, which has been stolen by an Ogre that she describes as having a 'belt fetish'.

I then continue downwards. Jaheira buys some darts, and Imoen loads up on a few more arrows. There's a reason for this.

I depart south and back to the Coast Way. I walk towards the southeast, and dispense with a large group of Xvarts, which are so weak that even a 1st level party can often dispense of them without the aid of a Sleep spell. I continue eastwards and kill a pair of Wolves with the help of Sleep.

Now I rest until it's night time and tread carefully forward to towards the east. At a certain point, Montaron goes into hiding (which is easier at night), and scouts ahead. I soon spot an Ogre. An Ogre can be a very dangerous proposition for a 1st level party, easily killing members in just one blow. So I utilize a strategy to minimize the risk. Montaron marks the Ogre's location, and then Jaheira plants an Entangle spell just beyond the Ogre's 'fog of war'. The strategy works. The party moves forward. The Ogre fails its saving throw, allowing Imoen and Jaheira to fire away at a safe distance and whittle down its hit points. Xzar also chips in with a couple castings of Larloch's Minor Drain. The Ogre at some point manages to break free and come forward. Imoen, Jaheira, and Xzar retreat, but the Ogre gets caught again at the edge of the large area covered by Entangle. Imoen and Jaheira resume fire, killing the monster.

The Ogre leaves behind:

Girdle of Masculinity/Femininity (cursed, changes wearer's gender) - Can be sold for about 500 gp.

Girdle of Piercing (+3 bonus to armor class vs. piercing weapons) - This is the girdle that Unshey wants back. But her reward is paltry so I just keep it. Khalid wears it. The reason is that some of my tactics against enemies that use missile weapons involving having Khalid and Yeslick stack up armor class bonuses against missile weapons, and then letting them absorb the onslaught harmlessly. This theme still works in SCS1 but you have to be more careful about executing it. The Girdle fits perfectly with this theme.

Caravan Bandits

Now I touch the east edge of the map to reveal Larswood. I then continue southwest and wipe out a bunch of Gibberlings after a Sleep spell.

I continue southwest, and here is where I make my first use of the aforementioned strategy against opponents that rely heavily on missile fire. I have Khalid at the lead and go onwards. I run into three Bandits and a Caravan Bandit Leader. Khalid is first in view, and Imoen and Xzar start off well back. Indeed one thing to keep in mind is that archers in SCS1 will often target spellcasters if they start off in immediate view. Khalid leads the charge, and he closes the gap unharmed. Avastrian puts the Bandits to Sleep, leaving the Leader alone by herself. Everyone closes in around her and then kills her. They then finish off the others one by one.

*Evil*
By the way, for the Evil Party, Kagain gets antsy about wanting to find out what happened to a Caravan that he was expecting. The spilt over wagons shown at the end of the video is what he's looking for.

Once they're done I collect the Bandit Scalps for sale. The Leader also leaves behind Entar Silvershield's Fibula, for anyone who's interested in the quest that involves Eldoth and Skie.

Andout and Jase

Now I continue my way westwards, slaughtering Xvarts and Gibberlings in typical fashion.

West, right on top of the road, will be a group of Bandits. In SCS1, they will ignore my foremost characters and take aim at any spellcasters if within their fog of war. I thus demonstrate this theme again. Khalid walks forward by himself, and absorbs their missile fire without a scratch. Avastrian casts Sleep from beyond the fog of war, and renders them helpless. The rest of the party then brings up the cavalry.

The video concludes with me making my way towards the south edge of the area, encountering a nervous messenger named Andout, and a boy who witnessed a caravan attack named Jase.

Kivan

Here I take a bit of a detour. I go to High Hedge briefly for the simple purpose of bringing Kivan into my party. I gladly ditch Xzar and Montaron.

Now it's time to get to Beregost.
