BARBARIAN CAMP

Wylfdene's Reflection

Now I speak to Angaar to be brought before Wylfdene again. With persistence, I obliged Wylfdene to look into the Black Ice Mirror. The cover is blown, as Wylfdene has in truth been possessed by the spirit of the White Dragon Queen, Icasaracht. The spirit departs after mortally wounding the Seer, and I help the Elk Tribe defeat the Wyrm Tribe inside the tent.

The Seer, upon her death, will leave behind a cloak called the Wailing of Virgins (+2 armor class vs. piercing and slashing weapons, +4 armor class vs. crushing weapons, immunity to fear, immunity to Emotion: Hopelessness and Symbol of Hopelessness, Cloak of Fear 1 day, female Humans, Elves & Half-Elves only, cursed and cannot be removed). This can be worn with magical armor, so Genevieve now has her cloak for the rest of the game. Any concerns about taking an armor class penalty from the Ring of Recklessness are now all but erased.

The battle rages on outside.

Tribal Warfare

Now I continue to kill more Wyrm Tribe Warriors outside. This is pretty easy, since the Elk Tribe Warriors are helping you out, but it can take some searching around.

Note how the Black Thorn makes use of the abilities from the Singing Blade of Aihonen, first invoking the Strength bonus, and then healing himself up after he's taken damage when neither Halagrim nor Cassandra are close by.

Once it's over, I do a little exploring around. One container towards the northeast corner will have a Halberd of Sparks +1. The other will have set 1 of the following upon first entering the Camp (long ago that is):

The choice doesn't matter to me. The Cloak of Invisiblity may be appealing for the Black Thorn, but I prefer the residual benefits that the Cloak of Displacement provides.

Hjollder will be waiting for me around the northwest corner, where he bids me to pursue Icasaracht, but I have a little more business in Lonelywood in first.

Vaarglan

Upon returning the Lonelywood, I enter the Whistling Gallows Inn and give Murdlaugh the Ice Rose for a hefty xp bonus.

Now I rest up and step outside the Inn. A Luskanite party of bounty hunters looking for Kieran Nye approaches demanding to know where he is. I refuse their leader, Vaarglan, and combat soon ensues.

Lanatir and Derrick immediately start by protecting themselves with Stoneskin. I spread out my efforts because this group has 3 spellcasters. Cassandra throws her Hammer Darts at Alpheus. The Black Thorn fires his bow at Vaarglan. Genevieve uses her speed and runs right up to the Priestess of Shar, immediately going on the attack and disrupting the Priestess' spells. This has the additional benefit of drawing off the nearby warriors to her as well. Halagrim notices that they're now clustered around Genevieve, so he casts Hold Person on them, and manages to paralyze one of the Mercenary Warriors.

Alpheus teleports, but Cassandra has stayed on top of him, and has now stunned him with her Hammer Darts. The Black Thorn changes targets and now opens fire on Alpheus to help bring him down as quickly as possible. Vaarglan has put up Stoneskin, so Derrick changes his ammunition to the Bolts of Lightning that he has left, and fires them at Vaarglan. The Bolts won't score piercing damage, but they can still score electrical damage even with the Stoneskin, so they stop Vaarglan from casting spells. Halagrim meanwhile has been targeted by the Mercenary Thief, and goes to work on him. Genevieve brings down the Priestess of Shar, and then Vaarglan.

Once the three spellcasters are gone, it's a mop up. Note that I didn't have things scripted out to the last detail. This battle could have shaken out a different way. But the more you understand combat mechanics in the game, the better you can make snap judgments and react to the situation as it changes or progresses.

There's a lot of loot be had here. Vaarglan leaves behind:

Alpheus leave behind:

The Priestess of Shar leaves behind:

One Mercenary Warrior leaves behind:

The other Mercenary Warrior leaves behind:

The Mercenary Thief leaves behind:

The Shadowed Studded Leather +4 will be the Black Thorn's armor for the remainder of the game, with its much welcome bonuses to damage resistance.

The party goes back in and accepts Kieran Nye's gratitude for another xp bonus.

Purvis

Now I visit Baldemar Thurlow's house, but both he and his wife have been murdered. It turns out Purvis is an assassin. We share a few hostile words and he departs.

I follow him to outside the house, and he attacks me. I kill him of course, and he leaves behind:

I'm done here, time to confront Icasaracht in her Lair.
