A VIDEO-BASED GUIDE TO PLAYING ICEWIND DALE 1
This is not intended as a complete walkthrough in the sense that it doesn't explore every possible avenue, or reveal where every single item can be found. If you want that kind of walkthrough for Icewind Dale 1, Dan Simpson's guide is readily available for that.
There are a number of reasons for this newest guide. In addition to complete solutions that I've written for games like Temple of Elemental Evil, and Neverwinter Nights 2, I have sometimes written game guides from a much more subjective viewpoint, like the ones I've written for BG2 and IWD2. It affords me an opportunity to explain in considerable detail the kind of analysis, preparation, and decision making that can produce a successful campaign. I have occasionally received requests to return to that style of writing, and thus have endeavoured to write a similar guide for Icewind Dale 1.
Secondly, I'm an avid user of Youtube, and frequently upload videos of my gameplay. I was struck by the idea of integrating some of those videos into game guides. This guide is embedded with my Youtube videos, with those videos accompanied by my explanations of what is going on and what decisions I am making.
As a side note, I installed the G3 Fixpack, as well as the following components of the Ease of Use mod:
Note also that the guide also accounts for the Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster expansions. The guide is thus written on the basis that both are installed. What this means is that I often reference Dan Simpson's lists for randomized items in particular places, but I don't mention the items that are removed from the lists following a Heart of Winter installation, and include items that are added by the installation. I also make things more subjective, as with many other aspects of this guide, by explaining which items I choose from the lists and why.
As for my 'Perfect Party' that I adventure through the north with, it consists of:
And without further ado, the adventure begins in Easthaven.
I’ve submitted past guides to Sorcerer’s Place as Dave Milward. My alias here, however, is Beren. If there’s anything you’d like to share with me, by all means you’re welcome to send me an e-mail to beren or contact me via PM on the SP message boards. If I find anything particularly helpful and worth mentioning specifically, I’ll give credit where credit is due in updates.
