DURLAG'S TOWER - ABOVE GROUND

Ulgoth's Beard Inn

Now I enter the Ulgoth's Beard Inn. Hurgan Stoneblade wants me to search for the Soultaker Dagger in Durlag's Tower. If you want to score a magic hammer out of this, choose the dialogue option that involves insisting on compensation.

Ulgoth's Beard Inn provides both a place to rest, and a store. Notable items include:

To Durlag's Tower

First I speak with Ike, just outside of the Ulgoth's Beard Inn. I take him up on his offer of a tour of Durlag's Tower, more for theatrical reasons than anything else.

I then head over to the Tower. I rest up and speak with the nearby Erdane. I load up on Potions of Master Thievery and Potions of Perception. There will be plenty of traps, and locked doors and chests, in the dungeons ahead, and Imoen will need help with some of them.

I continue south, and make my way towards the inner courtyard of Durlag's Tower. There's a number of monsters I encounter along the way.

Battle Horrors and Doom Guards - These guys are pretty tough individually, but a Wand of Paralyzation is a pretty reliable way to render them helpless. This tactic can be enhanced by hitting them with a Doom spell beforehand.

Dopplegangers - SCS Dopplegangers start off with Mirror Image and Haste in place. Remove Magic is a reliable method of making them much easier to kill.

Skeletons - Very easy by now. You can either hack them down or blow them away with Fireballs at a distance if enough of them are grouped together.

I make a thorough sweep of the path leading south, the inner courtyard, and the surrounding battlements, to collect as much xp as I can.

Ike's Tour

Here I speak to Ike twice outside the tower itself. I then enter the tower. Once inside, Jaheira casts Protection from Fire on Avastrian. There's a specific reason for this.

Avastrian enters the central room, and speaks with Ike several times. Once this happens enough times, a Demonknight shows up, announces that the 'tour is over', and then blows the tourists (including Ike) away with a couple of Fireballs before teleporting away. Avastrian was protected against any fire damage.

The video concludes with Imoen looking around for odds and ends of treasure.

Ghasts in Durlag's Tower

I go up the stairs to the next level. There will be quite a few Ghasts here. It's simply a matter of bringing them into the central room where the party will have a clear line of fire. This, coupled with their slow movement rate, will make them easy kills at a distance.

The remainder of the video involves Imoen making the rounds, disarming traps, and looting treasure.

Basilisks Atop the Tower

The stairway at the bottom leads outside and to the top of the tower. There will be a few Basilisks around here, and the method remains the same. I have Avastrian stack up on Protection from Petrification spells, and then cast them on the entire party. The party can then kill the Basilisks risk-free.

At about 3:24 of the video, I show a trapped niche that holds some Acid Arrows and a Scimitar +2.

Daital's Ghost

Now I go up to the next level. In a room to the south there is the Ghost of a former friend of Durlag's, Daital. It doesn't matter what dialogue options I choose, he's going to attack. He's a pretty powerful Mage, and also adds Protection from Magic Weapons on top of the usual buffs. The Protection from Magic Weapons only last four rounds, so what I do is have Avastrian tease slowly forward to bring him only onto the edge of my fog of war. Once his buffs are up, I have Avastrian quickly retreat into the central room. By the time Daital comes after me, his Protection from Magic Weapons is nearly expired. The party grabs the opportunity to pounce all over him, and are able to quickly bring down his buffs and then himself with sustained attacks.

The remainder of the video consists of Imoen going around disarming traps and looting containers. The noteworthy item here is a Tome of Insight in an altar towards the northeast corner. Avastrian uses this to give himself another permanent +1 to Wisdom.

Kirinhale

Now I go up to the next level. I go through the north door, and then west. A Succubus named Kirinhale wants to talk to me. The good party is intent on killing her, so I lead her on towards the central room so that the party has a line of open missile fire on her. I refuse her offer, and she attacks, often with Dire Charm. But considering that I can stay on top of her from the word go, she's easily killed. She leaves behind a lock of her hair, and the Staff Spear +2, which I'm not interested in.

*Evil* Asteroth brings her lock of hair to Riggolo, so that Riggolo is cursed to remain trapped in the tower instead of Kirinhale. Riggolo then attacks me, and I kill him for his Shortsword +1.

The narrow hallways to the northeast have Ghasts. A trick Avastrian uses is to bring one in sight, and hit it with a Wand of Lightning. The lightning bolt often bounces around multiple times within the narrow hallways, and this can lead to killing off some of the Ghasts very quickly. Avastrian's Boots of Speed also allow him to get himself out of harm's way very quickly.

The remainder of the video consists of Imoen searching around for traps and treasure.

Bayard

Now the party begins to travel downwards, to the level just below where the party first entered the Tower. Avastrian begins by softening up a few Ghasts coming from the room just to the left with a bolt of lightning, allowing them to be killed more easily.

Avastrian then speaks with at length with an Elf named Bayard, who warns the party to leave with their lives while they still can.

The video concludes with Imoen looking around for more treasure and traps, and Avastrian hitting more Ghasts with bolts of Lightning.

Now the party begins to explore the underground levels of the Tower.
