CLOAKWOOD SPIDER NEST

Tiber

I arrive at the next part of the Forest, and am immediately attacked by a pair of Phase Spiders that can teleport around.

I cross the ford and meet a man named Tiber, who wants me to find his brother, Chelak, who's gone missing.

There's fairly common themes here. Imoen activates her book, and treads slowly forward looking for traps. The moment either a spider or an Ettercap comes within view, she immediately regroups with the party. During the first such sequence, it is becoming obvious that a LOT of Spiders are heading my way, so Imoen grabs the opportunity to damage many of them with a Fireball.

Further west is an area that has both a few Ettercaps, and plenty of web traps. Imoen takes her time to disarm them, and to lead any Ettercaps she comes across back to the waiting arms of the party.

A little further west still will be a trio of Giant Spiders, which are now enhanced in SCS with web attacks that can paralyze a single party member. A single Giant Spider isn't especially tough. But a group of them can lead to multiple party members getting webbed and poisoned. So, I grab every edge that I can. I start with a tried and true tactical theme. Kivan scouts out their location, and then Imoen hits them with a Fireball from outside their fog of war. Once they close in, Imoen starts tagging them with single-target spells. The scenario of danger that I described still plays out, but I survived precisely because I took every edge that I could.

I now make for a narrow ravine that leads towards the northeast corner after Imoen disarms another trap. I conclude the video by going up the ravine, and bumping the north edge of the map in order to make the next area of the forest accessible.

Centeol

I continue westwards, and run into a Sword Spider. Sword Spiders don't cause poisoning, but they can attack multiple times per round. I thus find it prudent for Imoen to hold it in place with a Chromatic Orb.

I continue westwards, and find the entrance to a large cave. Inside will be a hideous bloated creature named Centeol. Combat is inevitable, whereupon many spiders of various sorts will appear. A double shot of Fireball from Imoen and an Oil of Fiery Burning from Khalid, both carefully placed a little behind Centeol, suffice to weaken the spiders and make killing them in close-up combat easier. Centeol apparently doesn't want to live anymore, so then I walk up and kill her as well.

Centeol herself leaves behind a Wand of Frost. The container behind her holds Chelak's body, as well as Spider's Bane (+2 Two-Handed Sword, Free Action on wielder). This will be Kivan's weapon for much of the game.

The video concludes with me stepping back outside and killing a few more Huge Spiders.

Chelak's Body

Now I explore the southwards portion of the area, disarming traps, and killing multiple groups of spiders with the same methods. The video concludes with me bringing Chelak's Body back to Tiber for 800xp.

My next destination is the part of the Cloakwood Forest inhabited by the Shadow Druid Enclave.
