LAKE CALENHAD

Kester

I travel to the shores of Lake Calenhad, then scrounge around for whatever items I can find. I show, for interest's sake, a conversation with Kester, who has had his boat confiscated by the Templars to prevent anyone from reaching the Circle Tower

I also show, for anyone who's interested in keeping the Mabari Hound as a core party member, a way for the Hound to get combat bonuses in some areas of the game. Some areas will have a landmark. If the Mabari clicks on the landmark, the Mabari will heed nature's call at that landmark. The result is that the Mabari Hound will gain +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, and +2 Willpower whenever he's in the same area as the landmark. The bonus is permanent in the sense that you can leave the area with the landmark, come back to the same area with the Hound, and the Hound will again enjoy the attribute bonuses while in the area.

Herbal Magic

I decide to do a couple of quests for the Mages' Collective now. This video shows a simple one, Herbal Magic. All you need to do is deliver 10 Deep Mushrooms to an agent of the Collective for xp and 1 gp.

Careless Accusations

The next quest is Careless Accusations. I only need to travel to Denerim to trigger the encounter. I could talk the Adventurer Leader into not delivering the message to the Chantry in Denerim, but it's more beneficial to kill him and his party. The first priority must be the Spirit Healer to the left, who can keep healing his comrades if you let him do so. Aldarion zaps him with a Crushing Prison, and then a Winter's Grasp, in order to kill him as quickly as possible. The next priority is the shield-wielding warrior who is right next to the Leader. Aldarion and Morrigan help matters along with single-target spells in order to kill him as quickly as possible. The Leader then becomes much easier to kill with most of his support gone. It then becomes a matter of cutting down the Leader, and then the Rogue.

The Leader leaves behind a magic ring, the Seal of Rat Red (+10 physical resistance, +10 mental resistance). I hold onto this ring and save it for Wynne as an interim ring. A Mage like Wynne will typically concentrate attribute points during level-ups on Magic and Willpower. Raising these attributes raises mental attributes as well, but not physical resistance. Physical resistance will thus be a pronounced weakpoint for Wynne, especially during the early going, and one that I seek to alleviate by saving the Seal of Rat Red for her when she joins my party.

I then go back to Lake Calenhad and collect my reward from the Mages' Collective.

Templar Carroll

Now I need to convince Templar Carroll to take me by boat across Lake Calenhad and to the Circle Tower. It is easy enough to suggest "Can't we work something out" with Leliana, Sten, or Morrigan, in the party.

Broken Circle

I arrive at the Circle Tower, and learn that it has been overrun with Abominations and Demons. I hold out to Knight-Commander Greagoir that I'll deal with the Tower's troubles.

Now that I have gained initial access to the Circle Tower, I begin to Shop Around.
