MINES

Guello and Shikata

The entrance to the Mines is at the southeast corner of Lower Dorn's Deep. The area will be watched over by Fire Salamanders. I shoot them down with missile weapons in order to prevent cumulative damage from their fire auras, and split missile fire if I see more than one of them. Ammunition that inflicts non-fire elemental damage is especially good for bringing them down quickly.

At some point I find Guello, and he explains that he can escape if I kill their king, Shikata, along with the rest of them. Shikata will be at the north side of the area, along with a few other Fire Salamanders. Shikata's fire aura does more damage than other Salamanders, so Derrick holds him in place with an Ice Lance spell. He also leaves behind Slayer (+5 Spear). Derrick has better in mind.

Once Shikata and all the Salamanders in the area have been killed, I inform Guello. I then go back to the Gnome Village and speak to Guello again for an xp reward.

Maiden Ilmadia

Now I come back to the Mines, and head for a doorway at the southeast corner. I then set up a savegame called 'Maiden Ilmadia'. I then head through the doorway, blow off the Fire Giant that talks to me, and then quicksave.

There are two chests by Maiden Ilmadia that I want to cherry pick. The one directly behind Ilmadia will set one of the following when you first enter:

The Repeating Heavy Crossbow is the easy choice for Derrick, and will be his crossbow for the rest of the game.

The chest just to the left of Ilmadia will set one of the following when you first enter:

I've often tried different things with my Gnome Fighter/Illusionist. I've sometimes gone with the Cairn's Blade or Slayer, but they don't offer anything besides straight damage. And I came to the realization that nothing in the game requires a +4 or better weapon to hit. So, I reasoned that a two-handed weapon that inflicts status effects becomes desirable. I also tried going with a Gloomfrost Halberd or Two-Handed Sword that you can have made for you during Heart of Winter, but those weapons usually have only a 5% chance of their status-effect kicking in, which I then found unsatisfactory. So ... I started to look to this list instead. The Cancerous Bastard Sword's disease effect acts far too slowly, and can't be used by good characters. Scratch. The Bastard Sword +3: Defender seems nice, but it doesn't really make sense (unlike Halagrim) when Derrick can simply make himself immune to all physical damage with spells like Stoneskin and Mirror Image. The choice that clearly emerges as best is the Doom Halberd, a straight half n' half chance of inflicting +2d3 fire damage, and a 15% chance of stunning its target. This will be Derrick's melee weapon for the rest of the game.

Now the problem is of course, that I'm trying to cherry pick these two chests for both the Repeating Heavy Crossbow, and the Doom Halberd, giving me 1/18 odds. This meant quite a few runs of reloading the 'Maiden Ilmadia' savegame, entering and talking to the Fire Giant, quicksaving, having Derrick cast Invisibility on himself and checking the chests, and then reloading when I don't get both. I only showed the first and the last in the video. But ... it was worth it. I reloaded the quicksave after the chests are set to have both items that I want, and then made my way towards Ilmadia's hut.

I then prepped up to the max. By the way, trying to steal her Potion of Storm Giant Strength doesn't work. You always get her Badge, and then combat begins. So, just top things off with Haste and rush in. No matter what you choose as dialogue options, combat is inevitable. Take her out first and foremost, since she can hit really hard if she quaffs both her Potion of Storm Giant Strength and her Oil of Speed. Once she falls, go to work on the Fire Giants. Once they're packed in closely enough, hit them with spells. Slow and Chaos were my choices.

Ilmadia leaves behind:

Now I loot the two chests behind her for the Repeating Heavy Crossbow and the Doom Halberd. Derrick is set for the rest of the game.

The rest of the video consists of me making a sweep of the area, taking down Fire Salamanders and various Elementals along the way.

At the north side of the area is an entrance to a Dark Temple.
