Items in Malefia

Skara Brae

The Old Man's Death

I return to the Old Man at the Review Board, only Tarjan has mortally wounded him. He tells me to take the artifacts of the gods, hidden near the entrance to Skara Brae, and journey to Malefia to stop Tarjan before he destroys all reality.

Talia learns the Apport Malefia and Reditus Malefia spells, and the former can only be used at a place called the Sulphur Spring.

Artifacts of the Gods

The artifacts of the Gods are in a building straight east from the gate to Skara Brae. Talia uses the Identify spell to uncover their special abilities.

The Wand of Power confers a 1 point improvement to AC, and can cast Greater Summon without limit. Not a big deal, but I have Talia equip it for thematic reasons.

The Sphere of Lanatir is a miscellaneous item that confers both a 5 point improvement to AC and a 2 point bonus for To Hit. Both bonuses make it perfect for a Geomancer, so Zarathos equips. He by now has AC to spare, so now I have him equip one of the Rings of Accuracy I've been holding onto in place of the Shield Ring he'd been wearing.

Ariel now equips the Shield Ring. Combined with her other items, and both the Ybarra's Mystic Force and the Shadow Shield spells, and that's just enough to bring her AC to a perfect -50. That in turn allows her to keep her Lak's Lyre for unlimited Bard songs.

I throw away my Cli's Lyre. Now I know some players may advocate using something like Cli's Lyre for the extra AC, and using Wineskins and such for when the Bard needs to recoup her songs. But even high-level Bards can burn away through songs really quick, especially when they use several each fight (like I often do). What cements my decision is that there's no anti-magic squares in Malefia, so I don't have to worry about my indefinite AC boosting buffs ever getting snuffed out.

Ferofist's Helm provides both a 7 point improvement to AC and a 2 point bonus for To Hit. Werra's Shield protects against breath weapons, and provides an 8 point improvement to AC (the best of any shield). Gallard equips both of them.

The Crown of Truth provides a 10 point improvement to AC. Lord Stygar equips it for the rest of the game.

The Belt of Alliria provides a 4 point improvement to AC, and a Luck bonus. Cassandra equips it, as the Luck bonus will enhance her use of the Haltfoe power from Red's Stiletto.

Sceadu's Cloak is an armor, and provides both a 12 point improvement to AC and a bonus to Hide in Shadows. The Helm of Justice provides a 9 point improvement to AC. Cassandra equips both of them, as only Rogues can wear them.

Valarian's Bow provides a 4 point improvement to AC, but Gallard's use of the Sword of Zar negates the need for any bows. I leave it in the party inventory.

The Hammer of Wrath allows the use of the Wrath of Valhalla spell without limit, but I'm well past the point of relying on melee damage for weapons. I leave it in the inventory.

Wilderness

Sulphur Spring

The Sulphur Spring is in the southeast corner of the map of the Wilderness. Talia casts Apport Malefia to teleport the party to the dimension of Malefia.

Malefia, Level 1

Strifespear

Be forewarned that there are three main levels of Malefia, and all three are VERY large. I start off at 0N 10E on the map of the first level of Malefia.

I go two squares ahead north, and find the dead body of Hawkslayer. I now get the Strifespear, the key feature of which is the ability to use Far Death without limit. The Shadelance will definitely lose its utility here, as many monsters here have thousands and thousands of Hit Points. Lord Stygar now goes back to insta-kill fighting, but now he can do it at a longer range than the other front-line characters.

2nd Staff of Gods

I go straight east a few squares until I fight random monsters at 2N 14E. I win another fight against random monsters at 2N 17E. I use Earth Ward to get rid of the trap at 3N 17E.

I continue with fights against random monsters at 5N 20E, 6N 19E, 4N 15E, 3N 15E and 5N 12E.

There is a square that replenishes Spell Points 5N 13E, and a portal going down to the second level at 6N 13E. I have a few more items I want to get, and both of these squares together facilitate an easy grind cycle. I go down and up the portal to renew the monster fights. I win the fights at 5N 12E, 3N 15E, 4N 15E, 5N 20E and 6N 19E. I use NUKE spells if the enemies are numerous enough, and replenish the Spell Points on 5N 13E if I need to. Down and up the portal to renew the cycle.

I get a second Staff of Gods during one of the cycles. Mordred equips it.

Mithril Suit

Another cycle leads to finding a Mithril Suit. It can be worn in the special suit slot like Diamond Suits. It only provides a 10 point improvement to AC, unlike the 15 for Diamond Suits. However, it can also be worn by Hunters.

Gallard equips it, and since he himself now has AC to spare, he replaces his Shield Ring with the other Ring of Accuracy that I've been packing around.

*NOTE* I had thought of grinding it out hoping for a couple of Mages' Gloves for both Talia and Mordred. But then, a couple of extra AC is not going to make a profound difference for a couple of characters who will never see front-line action if I play combats right. So now I decide to proceed towards the climax.

Levelling Up in Tenebrosia

First I have Ariel switch her default song to Sir Robin's Tune. I'm done with random fights now.

I go back to the initial entry portal, and cast Reditus Malefia to return to the Wilderness.

I next go to Shadow Rock and cast Apport Tenebrosia to return to Tenebrosia. I go to the Wizard's Tower in Black Scar. Everybody advances four or five levels. I may as well cash in the xp I earned while grinding for the odd item that I still wanted in Malefia.

I go back the way I came and return to Malefia. Freeing the spirits of the Gods of Old is my next objective.
