Catacombs Level 2

Dopplegangers beneath Candlekeep

Now I go down to the second level. There will be a large central room, adjacent to a series of smaller rooms. Each of the smaller rooms has a Doppleganger pretending to be somebody that the protagonist will have known from Candlekeep. They'll be by themselves and thus not much trouble.

Note how I tend to hug the walls of the room. The central portion can spawn Skeletons endlessly, so it's best to just avoid it as much as I can. If some Skeletons do come into view, like at the end of the video, I'll just blow them away with Fireballs.

Elminster and Gorion?

Now I start to go up a side hallway leading northwest. Yeslick casts Remove Fear on the party. Just up ahead are three Greater Dopplegangers pretending to be Elminster, Gorion, and Tethoril. Combat is inevitable, so I just cut to the chase. They're joined by a few more Dopplegangers. I used to try convoluted strategies in vanilla BG1 to try and bring down their Mirror Images, like using Bolts of Lightning and then getting out of the hallway. But in SCS a well-placed Remove Magic spell gets the job down by getting rid of both their Mirror Images and their Haste spell.

Winthrop

The party continues along the tunnel. There are several rooms adjacent to the hallway. One of them has a Doppleganger pretending to be Winthrop, and he's easily dispatched.

The party then follows the hallway to its end, and finds the way down to the caves.
