LEAVING LOTHERING

A Poisonous Proposition

I go back to the Dane's Refuge and speak with the farmer Barlin, who wants my help to construct poisonous traps. Leliana already has sufficient skill in poison to do this, so all I'll need are 3 Toxin Extracts and 3 Flasks. Note that an easy way to do this is to look for a rubble pile west of the bridge, on the south side. The rubble pile holds 6 Flasks, which can be used to create the three Venoms that I need. The rubble pile also holds Golden Scythe 4:90 Black, which can be gifted to Oghren.

However, I do that and more. I still buy all the Toxin Extracts I can from the merchant near the Chantry. By the way, I also buy Wine from the unscrupulous merchant, which can be gifted later on to Wynne. The reason for buying the extra Toxin Extracts is that there is another quest much later on that will also demand a significant number of Toxin Extracts.

And it turns out that there are yet more Toxin Extracts to be found. I head for a cave towards the northeast corner of the area. There will be six Spiders at the cave's entrance. Do not rush in like the cavalry for this one, since their ability to cast webs and use Overwhelm can create a lot of problems if you try to take them on all at once. Note that I purposefully hold Alistair back, and use missile fire to draw forward one or two Spiders at a time and separate them from their fellows. It thus becomes a process of attrition. Each of the Spiders leaves behind a Toxin Extract.

The last part of the video is where I have Leliana concoct three Venoms (One Toxin Extract plus one Flask three times over), and then bring them to Barlin for my reward.

Malifecarum Regrets

Next comes the fight with the Darkspawn in the northwest corner of Lothering. The theme is a familiar one. Alistair leads the charge to present himself as the initial target. Morrigan puts most of them to Sleep. The Hurlock Alpha becomes a real threat after he breaks free from Aldarion's Cone of Cold, so I make it a priority to take him down as quickly as possible with single-target spells. It becomes a mop up after that. Two Dwarves, Bodahn Feddic and Sandal, thank me for saving them and then try to salvage what's left of their goods.

There are two more points of interest. One is a crate that holds the Small Carved Statuette. Alistair likes artistic representations of supernatural creatures, so I gift him with the Statuette for +10 approval. The other point of interest is the Blood Mage that lies dead. I loot her body for a letter that provides a Codex Entry titled "Malifecarum Regrets". Note that finding this entry before Lothering is destroyed is necessary if you want to find Bel's Cache in the Circle Tower.

I am now ready to set up Camp.
