Getting through the Tenement of Thugs

The first time you enter the Tenement of Thugs, you will see a short cinematic of Pharod being killed by Shadows. This means that you can now enter Pharod's Vault.

You can in fact get through the Tenement by simply making a straight dash for the exit at 28 on the map, dodging any Thugs who try to kill you on the way, but taking the longer path I describe below is recommended for the game experience.

You enter the Tenement at 1, where you find the exit back to the Northeastern Hive Sector. Here you will also find a Tiefling Painter who won't answer any questions and a barrel with 5 copper pieces.

At 2 you will find a Starved Dog Barking Thug and a barrel with 220 copper pieces. The Thugs in here are tougher than the Hive Thugs but a single Thug shouldn't cause you much trouble.

One of the two Painted Thugs at 3 has apparently painted the other in his sleep, and they are now fighting. You can take out them both, or wait and kill the survivor of their internal battle. Or leave them alone.

There's a dart trap in the floor at 4.

Tiresias at 5 is one of the Chaosmen. If you are a member of the Xaositects yourself, you can learn from him that there is a large gang of Thugs in the main room at 26. Otherwise he is not much use.

Sybil at 6 is a thief who has entered the Tenement to plunder but is afraid to go any further. She will also tell you about the large gang of thugs in the main room. But she can give you a hint about how to get out without having to fight all the Thugs: You have to take the key from the Mage on the top floor at 19 and use it to open the locked door at 23, and sneak behind the boxes in the main room to the exit to the Alley of Lingering Sighs at 28. To complete this quest, you must either successfully sneak out without the Thugs in the main room noticing you, or you must kill all the Thugs. You get 1,000 XP for completing this quest, and the Tattoo of Tenement Shadows becomes available at Fell's Tattoo Parlor.

If you simply kill Sybil, she will drop a small pouch, some money, an Adder's Tear, and a Chained-Teeth Earring.

The container at 7 holds a Silver Bracelet.

Beware the relatively weak trap at 8.

The barrel at 9 contains 147 copper pieces.

Bash or lockpick the door to the small room at 10. Inside you'll find a locked and trapped container with 121 copper pieces.

The wheelbarrow at 11 contains an Iron Prybar which you'll want to bring along. You will need a prybar in the Alley of Lingering Sighs. The staircases lead up to the second floor.

On the second floor, the staircases at 12 lead back down to the first floor.

There's an arrow trap in the floor at 13.

In the barrel at 14 you can find:

At 15 you will find a Starved Dog Barking Thug and a Starved Dog Veteran. Veterans are a tougher breed of Thugs.

The stairs at 16 lead up to the third floor.

On the third floor, the stairs at 17 lead back down to the second floor.

At 18 you will find two Starved Dog Barking Thugs and a Starved Dog Veteran.

The Starved Dog Mage at 19 has the key you need to open the locked door at 23. You can try to avoid his spells by having Annah backstab him and letting Morte make good use of his Litany of Curses (always a good weapon against mages!).

The wheelbarrow at 20 contains four Clot Charms and 95 copper pieces. The barrel is empty. Beware the arrow trap in the floor!

There's a single Thug at 21.

Once you've cleared out the second and third floor, make your way down to the first floor. In the room at 22 you'll meet two Starved Dog Barking Thugs.

The locked door you need to use to sneak out of the Tenement is at 23. You can do this immediately or clear out the rooms at 24 and 25 first.

Hang around at 24 a short while and you'll discover a secret door in the wall. From here it's just a short dash to the exit to the Alley of Lingering Sighs. But you won't get out unnoticed, so this is an emergency solution if you need to escape fast.

At 25 you will find a Starved Dog Barking Thug. After killing him you can search the toilet for a Blood Fly Charm.

At 26 is a large group of Starved Dog Barking Thugs and Starved Dog Veterans. If you want to kill them all, your best bet is to lure them out one by one using Morte's Litany of Curses, or to use a spell of mass killing, like Cloudkill (use one of the Abyssal Pipes you found in the Drowned Nations in Act 3). Fighting the entire gang at once is not recommended! ;-)

The container at 27, which you can only access if you also take the fight with the Thugs, contains:

The exit to the Alley of Lingering Sighs is at 28.
