The first time you enter Zakee's Tavern in Amkethran, you are approached by a man named Marlowe. He has a problem but would like to discuss it in private in his home. By all means accept!
First, leave the tavern. On the map of Amkethran, find the little house at 11 and enter it, then leave through the hole in the roof.
Marlowe's house is at 13. Enter.
Marlowe explains that he is a merchant from Calimshan. An evil Lich named Vongoethe desired his daughter and has pursued them and stolen her soul. Vongoethe has hidden in the graveyard, i.e. the sealed-off Cave of the Dead. Luckily, Marlowe has bribed the guard to let you enter.
Exit back out to Amkethran and go to the entrance to the cave at 3. Speak to the Monk there and he'll let you enter.
Enter the Cave of the Dead. Don't bother about putting up spell protections just yet. :-)
Go to the middle of the cave, and Vongoethe appears. For now, don't attack but listen to what he has to say. He tells you a thing or two – like that Marlowe promised him his own soul in return for 20 years of success. So Vongoethe has taken Malla's soul to force Marlowe to live up to his side of the bargain.
Promise Vongoethe to return with Marlowe, then leave.
Go back to Marlowe. But before speaking to him, you may want to put up spell protections. Death Wards on weaker party members comes to mind, as does protection from Fear.
Confront Marlowe with what Vongoethe told you. Marlowe admits. And everybody returns to Vongoethe.
Marlowe volunteers his soul to Vongoethe, and you receive Malla's Soul Stone.
And you can now choose whether to let Marlowe die, or double-cross Vongoethe.
If you pick a fight with the Lich, he summons several Skeletons, Skeleton Archers, and Banshees (hence the Death Ward). Marlowe runs back to the cave entrance but might still get killed. Vongoethe drops the Ring of Anti-Venom.
As always, one or more shots of Sunray is a formidable weapon against large groups of undead.
If you saved Marlowe, give Malla's Stone to him. Each party member receives 15,000 XP and your reputation goes up by one point.
If Marlowe is dead, go back to Malla and restore her, and optionally offer her some money to get started. Each party member receives 10,000 XP. If you give her 1,000 GP, the party also gets a reputation point.
(You can also decide to keep the Soul Stone for yourself and use it as an ioun stone. But you'll miss out on the experience.)
