Getting Here:  You must escape from Irenicus' Dungeon.

"Greetings and well met, my name is Torn Vien, your guide while you stay in Athkatla and I will be most honored to show you around each district and share with you the secrets of the shops, shady taverns, comfortable inns and those who live day in and day out here in the city. I have been a guide to those in Athkatla for over five years now and I am very well known in the streets and pride myself on being one of the most notable guides here in Athkatla.

Now the Waukeen Promenade District is one of the more laid back districts and trouble will only find you if you go looking for it, otherwise your stay here should be fairly uneventful at best. You'll notice as I show you about that the circus is in town, setting up their colored tents and showing off their shows to everyone who comes through here, a wonderful sight to see indeed.

Shops litter this district as well and you shouldn't have much trouble finding any gear you will need to equip yourself, you are adventurer's are you not? You're certainly dressed like it that's for sure and that could prove to be a bad thing around here too. You see, the Waukeen Promenade District is filled with wealthy merchants and nobles who've been taught over the years to shun people like you and I, so hold your blade in your scabbard if you can for some of these folk have their noses stuck in the clouds and they certainly don't mean to offend, they simply don't know any better.

Come, let me show you around this district!" and with that, Torn Vien takes the lead.

"Aye, you'll be finding a lot of goods here in Waukeen's Promenade District that will certainly raise a brow or two. If you're looking for exotic, magical items I suggest you take a walk to the Adventurer's Mart or perhaps you're looking for some spells to beef up your spellbook? We've got that too, so come along and let me show you what Waukeen's Promenade has for someone like you!"

Waukeen's Promenade District  -  Shops  -  Adventurer's Mart

Outside of the Adventurer's Mart
Adventurer's Mart

The Adventurer's Mart isn't too far away from the Circus that has arrived and its location couldn't be better for all the rare and exotic items that pass through the hands of circus folk who trade and barter with others from far away lands. It is run by a well known and retired adventurer by the name of Ribald who houses one of the nicest selections of items that one can choose from and leave with a smile on your face. The prices are above average and Ribald knows this being one of the only ones selling large volumes of magical equipment in Waukeen's Promenade. The service is top notch and if you have Jaheira in your party, Ribald and her will talk like old friends and an interesting conversation to listen in on if you're not too far away.

Ribald's items are plenty and the more notable ones are listed below which can be obtained by speaking with the man himself, who can be found mulling behind his messy counter-top.

Mira's Goods

Mira is a large, fat friendly lady located near the Circus and buying items from her can be done as well as sold, although her magical selection is limited and nothing compared to the Adventurer's Mart and Ribald's collection but her prices are cheaper when you compare the two shops.

Have a look for yourself, you'll find Mira's magical collection saves you some money over Ribald.

Enge's Shop, unfortunately for him, is situated above the Adventurer's Mart and because of this, loses out on a lot of potential customers, passing up his small store for the much larger and well stocked shop that Ribald runs. Enge doesn't have much of a selection in terms of magical items and what he does have, doesn't warrant the time it takes to climb the stairs to his store and purchase items.

He'll be out of business in no time unless word spreads of the Large Shields +1 he sells, for they are much lower in cost than what Ribald charges.

Now Arnolinus and Perter have done very well for themselves, starting a joint business together and selling some very good equipment and at considerable cheaper prices than Ribald who runs the Adventurer's Mart. This has made the two of them successful in what they do, Arnolinus makes the armor and weapons while Perter deals with bows and arrows, each specialized in bringing you quality at a low cost.

Maheer the Merchant
Maheer the Merchant

It seems all merchants trying to get their own establishment up and running are not having much luck within Waukeen's Promenade District, having to compete with other stores nearby, Maheer doesn't have much to choose from. It's worth a look though if you are passing through.

If it is magical items you are seeking, he has a mild selection and Assassins may want to stop by and take a look at some of his Throwing Daggers. Maheer does direct you to another, a Dwarf in The Docks District by the name of Cormwell that makes magical items as well as trades them.

If you happen to have the Horn of Valhalla on you, Maheer can upgrade it twice but you will need a diamond and a beljuril in the party for this to happen as well as some extra funds to make this all possible. If you do not have one or the other, Maheer will tell you that he can do another upgrade on the horn if you simply find him the gems that are required.

Waukeen's Promenade District  -  Taverns  -  Den of Seven Vales

Den of Seven Vales
Den of Seven Vales

It's strange how, right next door to the Den of Seven Vales is Mithrest Inn who's patrons are rich, flashy and snobbish while those who frequent the Den of Seven Vales are friendly, considerate and talkative. It's like walking from night into day, simply taking a few short steps next door to their neighbour.

The cost for ale is more expensive in the Den of Seven Vales, but only by a gold piece and their cost of rooms are exactly the same as Mithrest Inn. It is those who are staying up on the second floor that you should be very careful of, especially if you're not experienced yet in having a true battle and if you think you're up for it, go upstairs and push those staying there around.

Den of Seven Vales 2nd Floor
Den of Seven Vales 2nd Floor

This battle for me was fairly difficult and it's best that you plan your attack rather than rushing forward into the room in hopes to take them out quickly because it won't happen the way you plan it if you do it this way. My strategy was using the entrance into the room as a center point to my attacks and this is exactly what I did to take them all down after they insulted my Half-Orc Barbarian Grub and his ugly face.

I used a Cloudkill Wand that I acquired from Irenicus' Dungeon and had it burst at the doorway so the Cloudkill came out into the hallway and into the room. I then casted Web in the same location, so when they came forward they would get stuck or die when walking through the Cloudkill spell. Once these two spells were cast, I dropped three fireballs into the room and those that survived came running out to attack me. The Web was a great help because it stuck the thief that is hiding in the shadows and who deals a very nasty backstab if he gets near, so have all your characters backs to the wall for safe measure.

My strategy might be different than yours, but it worked and it also took me 3 tries to come up with one that did. This is a difficult battle for anyone who has just escaped from Irenicus' Dungeon and if you have your own strategy for this battle, feel free to e-mail me with a very detailed description of the spells you casted and what you did during the battle and I'll add it here, credit given to you in a BATTLE TIP! box.

BATTLE TIP!  Sent in by Michael Soo

  • Hi, this is in regards the the fight at the top of the inn (in the promenade district). This is what I did, charmed the thief, barbarian and mage (mental domination worked the best) took everyone over by the familiar then attacked it to begin the battle. The familiar should die before it gets that annoying shield up, and the dwarf attacks the thief. After killing the dwarf, I went for the barbarian, then thief, then mage. Pretty simple since it's alway 4 or 5 on 1, none of my characters were ever in mortal danger.

BATTLE TIP!  Sent in by Wolfgang Klenk

  • I heard/read about the difficult battle in the 2nd floor of this tavern. So after leaving Irenicus' Dungeon, I headed there and tried various battle tactics. Alas nothing worked. Until I checked Jaheira's spellbook carefully. Mental Domination? I memorized that spell and casted it on the dwarf. He resisted twice, I had to rest, and the 3rd time he did not resist. My party was parked outside the room, on the corridor and waited, while the dwarf killed the mage and his familiar, before the barbarian killed him. Then my group rushed in and we quickly finished the remaining two.

BATTLE TIP!  Sent in by Dave

  • I cast Web at the doorway so when they came forward they would get stuck coming out of the room. I then got the character who was carrying the Ring of Human Influence from the Circus to charm Mencar Pebblecrusher. I then used silence on Sorcerous Amon and dispel magic on Pooky. The addition of the extra strong character made the killing of the other characters a lot easier and he was easily killed when everyone else was finished off and he was weakened.

BATTLE TIP!  Sent in by Lythander

  • I convinced them that I was leaving, then I had my thief Hide in Shadows until he was behind the Wizard. A single backstab took care of the Wizard and initiated the battle. Prior to the backstab, I placed my two 'big' guys against their thief. As soon as he gets hit a couple times, he cowers. My mage cast monster summoning II against Mencar & fortunately for me, a couple big ogres and another large character appeared. This kept him busy for a while. My priest cast hold person on the other warrior in the room, and it worked. My thief hit the familiar with a wand of magic missiles a couple times to keep him from getting spells off until the priest was done 'holding' the warrior. With that, the priest cast the insect swarm on the familiar to keep it from doing much. My thief wandered over behind the held warrior and backstabbed once, then sliced & diced a couple more times to finish him off. Finally all of my characters focused ranged attacks against Mencar until he dropped.

Mithrest Inn
Mithrest Inn

Mithrest Inn can be found on the eastern side of the Waukeen Promenade District, a view from its front porch and higher elevation than the streets below make this a place one can come to relax while watching the setting sun. Prices here are higher than average, aiming for the upper class market of Athkatla society, so bring extra coins when you come for a stay as well as your best smile for the clientele are somewhat snobby towards outsiders.

The drinks do not come cheap either, the cheapest being Golden Sands, which sells for 3gp a mug, the most costly to parch your throat is Iriaeboran Ale which runs at 15gp a mug.

Rooms range from Peasant up to Royal, the latter very costly but well worth it for the view from the window of the colorful circus tents found below.

His home can be found next to the Adventurer's Mart and perhaps this is why he left so suddenly, too much traffic of merchants and dealers always hanging out in front of his door.

The inside is lightly furnished and there isn't much to be found when searching through all the contents found here. Surely it could be used to store your own extra goods if you wanted it to.

Waukeen's Promenade District  -  The Circus

"The Circus always brings more people to the Waukeen Promenade District every year that it rolls through Athkatla, always with new acts and shows they've picked up along the way and never disappoint. This year though, the first of all the years they have been coming through here, something has gone amiss!

Word is out on the street is that something foul broke out of its cage and has now taken control of the circus workers as well as one of the tents. It has many of the Athkatla Watch on edge when doing their patrols through the circus grounds. They are nervous of something, yet no one really knows what it is.

This of course could just be my imagination, but I hear more than you may think, so take my word as you wish and hopefully it will help you in the long run. The Circus, besides these talks is a wonderful place to visit and take your time in to view the shows, the animals and to talk to the locals as well as circus acts that make this such a wonderful display. You can find it located in the centre of Waukeen's Promenade, just follow the sound of laughing children and you will find the way.

I'll be looking at the Moose if you need me" Torn Vien shouts.

Waukeen's Promenade District  -  The Circus  -  Circus Tent

Outside the Circus Tent
Outside the Circus Tent

Standing outside of this tent is a nervous looking city guard, who is alone and constantly darting his head from side to side as if expecting something to jump out at him at any second. You notice he takes a few steps back as you approach, only to stop quickly as he realizes he's backing into the very tent he's guarding.

Speaking with him, you will learn that something has happened inside of the Circus Tent he is watching, waiting for people to come and look into the happenings that have been going on for the last few days, as those who have entered the Circus Tent have failed to come out. The guard has no intention on entering the tent, his duty is to warn those from going inside, but won't stop you if you want to explore its depths yourself.

Inside the Circus Tent
Inside the Circus Tent

Passing through the tent flap, you will eventually be greeted and stopped at a bridge by a Genie who sends out much praise for the one called Kalah and if you plan on meeting Kalah himself, a question it is that you must answer to show you are worthy of entering the inner tent beyond. The Genie will ask you two questions, the second only if you get the first question incorrect but if your answer is right the first time, passage will be granted into the inner tent on the other side of the bridge.

'Prince 30, Princess 40' is the correct answer to the first question and will gain you 19,500xp for answering it correctly.

'Nothing' is the correct answer to the second question and this will gain you 14,500xp.

If you got both questions incorrect, and how you did that is beyond me when I'm telling you the right dialog options to choose, the Genie will attack you and do what he can to stop you from advancing into the rest of the tent. Don't underestimate him because he has the ability to turn your characters to stone. As well, he is very fast, getting at least two or three attacks per round.

Once you've correctly answered the questions or killed the Genie, move forward and into the tent on the other side of the bridge.

Inside the Circus Tent
Inside the Circus Tent

As you make your way through this area, you will be greeted by a very large Ogre who pleas for your help and this Ogre is actually an illusion created by Kalah himself and is really Aerie who wants nothing more than for you to help her. Her cracking voice should be enough to tell you of the horrors that she has faced while in the circus so find the SWORD KEY that needs to break out of her chains and the illusion placed on her.

Now on your way to the commoners, you will come across a Spider who you can speak to and learn what has happened inside of the tent. Hanna is the mother of the young boy who can be found standing outside of the Circus Tent and once you have solved this strange event within the circus, make sure you reunite the two.

The commoners she speaks of can be found here as well, which are really Ogres behind the illusion of humans that you will find, who will not attack you if you go near, nor speak with you either and you will have to initiate the battle yourself so they reveal their true nature. Run your sword through these Ogres and snag the SWORD KEY for Aerie and return to her to set her free.

Aerie is a welcomed addition to the party at this point because of her healing abilities and her wizard spells, which I suggest you memorize the ones you want before going through to the next segment of this solution.

TIP!

Aerie is a wonderful companion to bring along with you until you find someone more suitable to your playing styles. Her clerical spells and wizard spells make her a strong force during battle both defensively and offensively, packing a punch when you need it the most. She will also form a strong bond with Jaheira and Minsc, the latter being the better of the two because Minsc after all that time in sorrow about his 'other' witch, will ask Aerie if she would be his witch to protect and watch over. This gives Minsc a new meaning to life and his personality goes through a swift change as during battle he seems more alive and of course, anyone who goes near Aerie will get a good kick in the butt!

Rest and memorize your spells before going forward, the Pleasure Slave will fill you in on some more information and then allow you to pass to the next stage. A spell that I found useful was Detect Illusion to cast on the foul beasts you will be facing soon enough, it's always better to be safe than sorry if you can simply remove a threat quickly rather than having it cause damage to you.

Inside the Circus Tent
Inside the Circus Tent

Werewolves and Shadows will quickly attack your party as you enter this part of the Circus Tent and it is up to you to determine what is an illusion and what is not. Take care of the ones you see immediately when you come through because if you move around, you'll only attract the others waiting in the darkness and it's easier to handle a small number than a larger one.

Clear this place out and don't forget to search around for hidden items because you never know what you'll find to help you on down the road.

Head up the stairs and prepare to meet Kalah himself! I suggest you rest once again and rememorize the spells you've casted to get to this point.

Inside the Circus Tent
Inside the Circus Tent

The last leg of your circus adventure ends here as you meet Kalah and his own illusions, Quayle can also be found here and Aerie will be happy that he is still alive. What Kalah has to say is all a lie, Aerie did not lead your party to their doom and once the battle begins, bring 'em all down!

If you concentrate all your attacks on Kalah as I did, when he falls everything else within the Circus Tent will as well, including all illusions that Kalah has casted and the battle will be over. A few lightning bolts and magic missiles should do the trick. Once the illusions have faded, you will notice the Circus Tent as it is supposed to be, with tables and gambling wheels scattered through the tent as well as Quayle, who is back to his normal self and if you recall Hanna the Spider, she too is back to her normal looking self.

Quayle and Aerie will say their farewells as Quayle obviously feels she is ready to explore the world. Have a word with Hanna as well, she will be very pleased of your efforts because now she can leave the Circus Tent and be reunited with her son who has been waiting outside all alone.

HELP GIRAN REUNITE WITH HIS MOTHER HANNA

Giran is found crying outside of the Circus Tent, where his mother was last seen going into and has yet to come out. The animal trainers came rushing out screaming for their lives and since then, the Amnish Guards have closed off the Circus Tent to outsiders, but you don't have to worry about not being able to get inside. The Amnish Guard watching the Circus Tent will allow you to pass, but only after he has given you a fair warning. Speaking with Giran, you can accept the task to find his mother inside.

Reuniting Giran and Hanna will give your party 2,500xp from Giran and 500xp from Hanna.

INVESTIGATE THE CIRCUS TENT

Investigating the Circus Tent is something that will gain you Aerie as well as some extra experience along the way. It is mentioned to you by the Amnish Guard who is guarding the Circus Tent and keeping people from wandering inside because those that have, have failed to come out.

Clearing out the Circus Tent will give you 1 Reputation Point.

AERIE'S QUEST

Aerie is trapped within the Circus Tent and worst of all, is in the form of an Ogre, an illusion placed on her for those who enter and she needs your help in ending the illusion that is on her. She needs you to retrieve the SWORD KEY found on the Commoners on the same level but those very Commoners have an illusion cast upon them as well and are in fact, Ogres.

Saving Aerie gives you 18,500xp.

FINDING ILLITHIUM

Guardian Telwyn from the Temple District will have asked you to speak with Sir Sarles, an artist whos skills surpass all others and it is 200 pounds of ILLITHIUM that he requires to create what the Temple of Helm wishes. Jerlia the Ore Merchant will be of some help and you should see her if you plan on completing this quest.

She will direct you to speak with Unger Hilldark found in The Copper Coronet who may very well have what you are looking for.

KELDORN'S FAMILY BUSINESS AFFAIR

If you had happened to have Keldorn in your party and made your way through the Government District to visit his home, eventually you will be coming here to speak with Sir William of Thorpe who has been fooling around with Keldorn's wife.

Sir William of Thorpe is found in Mithrest Inn sipping away on some wine and when you converse with him, make sure you keep him alive for the best interest of your party and Keldorn.

Doing so will allow you to return to speak with his wife and ease her mind that her lover has not been harmed and that Keldorn wants nothing more than to get his life back. By telling his wife that this will be his last quest and after that he will return home to spend all his time and effort on his family, the party will receive experience and have Keldorn remain with the group.

Dungeon Master Notes

Excellent! Just excellent. I felt like part of Faerun when I was here, the sounds of voices, dogs, children and people fighting in the background as I walked through Waukeen's Promenade District, not to mention the large scale battle as the introduction to Amn and Athkatla were very well done. With the loss of Imoen, I felt that the introduction to a replacement mage in Waukeen's Promenade District, you got the feeling that something just wasn't right in the Circus Tent and went to investigate.

This bait and lure trick was well done as not once did I feel the game was pointing me to another NPC to join my party and with what happens inside of The Circus, I had no idea I was going to find one in here. This surprise adds depth to the game and feel to the world we're playing in.

Party Advancement

The loss of Imoen hit my party hard as I knew I would miss her magic and her ability to find traps, remove them as well as open locks and my search began immediately after my escape from Irenicus' Dungeon. The sun was setting, twilight approaching and I didn't want to be walking around in a strange city at night and I went to find an Inn.

Mithrest Inn was cozy enough, but Grub, my Half-Orc Barbarian saw that it had 'snob' written all over it but we entered nevertheless. The common room fell silent as Grub was the first to walk in, followed by the rest of the party, their own bruises clearly visible and the people inside began to whisper to one and other, glancing over at the bouncers to make sure they were available in case trouble broke out. Heading towards the bar, Grub held his head up high, proud of who and what he was despite all the comments he heard on those whispers, but even the Inns owner had little to say. The rest of the group took seating around one of the tables and waited for Grub to do his rounds, asking politely to those within about Athkatla, its customs and people who made the city, but it seemed like everyone was in no mood to be seen talking with a Half-Orc.

Jaheira took note of the cold stares and hard faces while Grub was moving about the common room introducing himself and asking questions and she got up to speak with the Mithrest Owner, who warmed up to Jaheira and shared some information that Grub was unable to attain. Jaheira kept an eye on Grub though and for the few minutes she was speaking with the owner, all hell broke out.

Grub finally snapped on a beautiful woman, who we later learned was named Lady Lasalla, her neck left for broke on the Inns floor after she told Grub 'he should be flogged for being who he was' and of course, Grub is a proud Barbarian, proud of his heritage and would hear nothing of the sort.

We made a very quick dash out that door as gasps and shouts were barked in our general direction, some people horrified while others wanted to tear our hearts out. Fearful of the city watch, the party bolted to the Circus, a massive gathering of tents, wagons and animal cages for side shows and general entertainment and if it was not for the cover of the Circus, we may have been caught for murder.

One tent was being guarded and Jaheira spoke with the guard standing watch outside, who warned us of the strange happenings going on within and if we were going to go inside, there was nothing he'd be able to do until those who were coming to investigate it arrived. We opted at ducking through the tents flaps, it was better to be in there than roaming the city with our faces fresh on the minds of others.

It was in here that we came across some evil magic, things appeared to be what we thought them to be but they were something else altogether and luckily we did not fall for such illusions and met a wonderful young Avariel girl who was brought into the circus as an exhibit, the wings she once had now removed due to disease. This winged elf introduced herself as Aerie and thanked us over and over again for believing her and I had immediate compassion for this young lass, her big, bright eyes and her smile was trusting. Minsc, although not openly showing it, was keeping an eye on her, perhaps not wanting to trust her, perhaps he thought she too was an illusion but I did not worry myself over it.

Yoshimo proved to be helpful to the party within that circus tent, but I still had lingering doubts about him and who he was. A strange fellow and not one I felt I could get to trust. I reminded myself that when the first chance came along and there was another who could take his spot, I would dismiss Yoshimo. For now though, he remained.

I learned while talking with her that she was trained in the arts of magic, both Arcane and Clerical, seemed that fate had brought us together in such a way and she was also filling a void I needed to fill within my party, Aerie became a new addition to the group.

01 Grub Barbarian Half Orc
02 Imoen Thief/Mage Human
03 Minsc Ranger Human
04 Jaheira Fighter/Druid Half Elf
05 Yoshimo [Bounty Hunter] Human
06 Aerie Cleric/Mage Avariel

Out of this entire mix of characters, Yoshimo went up a level while my main character still had yet to as a Barbarian.
