CARCERI

Once again, cutter, welcome to Hell! Your ultimate goal in this area is to enter the Curst Administration Building at 18 on the map below and face down Trias. However, before you do so, it would pay off to explore this area fully and do as many good deeds as you can. Not only are the deeds worth a ton of experience, they also turn to your advantage in the battle with Trias.

The Curst Administration Building is described on a separate page.

The following smaller buildings are described at the bottom of this page:

What to do in Carceri

You arrive in Carceri at 1.

The Dump Caretaker at 2 tells you that you must strike down Trias and make the town recant its treachery and deceit before Curst can return to the Outlands. To combat Trias, you must weaken him through good deeds and by turning the townsfolk away from chaos and evil.

In other words, the more good deeds you can do, and the more sense you can talk into people's heads, the weaker Trias will be when you face him.

The Caretaker also tells you that you can rest at the Apothecary and the Barracks if you need to.

To help you, the Caretaker gives you a Scroll of Meteor Storm Bombardment.

At 3 you will find Berrog and Tovus Giljaf caught under an overturned wagon. Berrog came to Curst in a misguided attempt to aid Trias, while Tovus Giljaf is the town's Burgher. Speak to one of them and then save either one, or both of them, by removing the wagon.

If your party has only one or two members or your Intelligence is 13 or lower, you can only save one of them so you will have to choose. Saving Berrog is Good, saving Tovus Giljaf is Evil, but both count towards one good deed.

You gain 125,000 XP for saving either Berrog or Tovus Giljaf but none for saving both. This error has been fixed in Qwinn's Fixpack.

Berrog gives you a Scroll of Deathbolt if you save him.

On the platform at 4 you will find some Curst Citizens being attacked by Gehreleths. Kill both Gehreleths before they slaughter the hapless citizens for 225,000 XP, and you have done another good deed to weaken Trias.

You can enter the Apothecary at 5.

At 6 you will find Jasilya being attacked by Thugs. (If Jasilya was killed in Curst, she is replaced by a generic young woman.) Kill the thugs to save the distressed damsel, then speak to her for 75,000 XP.

Citizens are being executed on the scaffold at 7. Speak to the Judge and try to talk some sense into him for 225,000 XP plus another good deed weakening Trias.

The entrance to the Barracks is at 8.

If you haven't killed either of them, you will find Tek'elach and Agril-Shanak fighting at 9. There is no particular reason to interfere. ;-)

At 10 you will find Curst Guards fighting Gehreleths. Kill the Gehreleths so the guards can help on the city walls.

The crates at 11 can be looted for:

The entrance to the Warehouse is at 12. Outside the warehouse, a group of looters are preparing to loot the place. Speak to their leader, the guard Jujog, and convince him that they won't have much time to enjoy their loot if Curst stays in Carceri. They will go and help fight the monsters, and you will gain another good deed.

There is a Crazy Mage up on the roof at 13. You can't get up there to attack him with melee attacks, so if you want to take him out, you'll have to let Nordom shoot him or kill him with spells. A new mage will spawn to take his place in a short while.

At 14 an angry mob is attacking a Curst Official. Speak to the citizen in the middle (the one displayed as "Angry Curst Citizen") and convince him to lay off the madness and help restore order instead for 150,000 XP and another good deed.

The slaver Hezobol at 15 is trying to capitalize on the city's misfortune. Convince him to help restore order instead for another 225,000 XP. Yet another good deed to your credit.

The Hermit at 16 will heal your party for free. He also tells you how far you have come in weakening Trias. If he suggests that you do more good deeds, heed his advice; the more you weaken Trias, the easier the battle will be.

There is another Crazy Mage on the platform at 17.

The entrance to the Curst Administration Building is at 18.

The Apothecary

This is a free resting place. Once you have cleared it of hostile creatures, that is!

Map Key

  1. Exit back to Carceri.
  2. Kester.
  3. Thugs.

The three Thugs at 3 are here to kill and plunder Kester at 2. Kill the Thugs, then speak to Kester who will go and organize his friends – such as they are – leaving you a free resting place.

The Barracks

The Barracks is another free resting place. But again, you have to clear it of enemies before you can rest.

Map Key

  1. Exit to Carceri.
  2. Two Guards and a Sohmien.

The two Guards at 2 are fighting a Sohmien. Once they are done, they will turn on you! Kill them for another free resting place.

The Warehouse

In this house you can do yet another good deed and gather some loot at the same time.

Map Key

  1. Exit to Carceri.
  2. Ebb Creakknees.
  3. Overturned crate.
  4. Crate.
  5. Ancient Scroll.

Remember Ebb Creakknees from the Smoldering Corpse Bar back in Sigil? Well, you will find him at 2. Turns out he is an Anarchist trying to take advantage of the situation to topple the city's administration. Tell him about the disaster that has overtaken the city to convince him to help bring order to the city instead of rooting it even faster in Carceri.

You receive 225,000 XP for convincing Ebb, along with another good deed weakening Trias. Also, Ebb Creakknees gives you a Scroll of Desert Hell before leaving.

The overturned crate at 3 can be looted for:

The crate at 4 contains:

At 5 near the entrance, there is a very small area where you can find the Ancient Scroll. Point your mouse to position x=393, y=285.
