BONES OF THE NIGHT

This is the home of Lothar, the master of skulls. Lothar has an impressive collection of skulls which he has brought back to life to tell him their secrets. When you first enter the Lower Ward at the beginning of Act 5, Lothar kidnaps Morte and brings him here. You will need to perform Lothar's two tasks before he will tell you what he knows; namely that you should seek out the Night Hag Ravel Puzzlewell.

About the Area

At 1 you will find the exit to the Lower Ward.

Morte is on the shelf at 2. When you enter the first time, you will automatically find him, and Lothar teleports in. Be polite to Lothar; you need his cooperation, and besides you can't kill him – but he can kill you!

On the shelf at 3 there is a Wererat Skull called Goatscomb. He is the wererat who originally infected Mantouk with lycanthropy. Mantouk later killed him using a magic book. Goatscomb can tell you that to kill wererats you need a magical weapon.

The Anarchist Skull Grimscalp on the shelf at 4 remembers seeing you in Curst, the gate town to Carceri. He and his friends rolled and killed one of your earlier incarnations. He can also tell you that gate towns like Curst can slide into the planes they border on.

The shelf at 5 holds a skull called Stern, a mage who killed a large number of people. Ironically he was betrayed by a book that led him into an ambush where Mantouk and his Wererats killed him.

On the shelf at 6 you find Ocean-before-the-Storm, a skull who used to be a Sensate in the Civic Festhall. He was killed by Ravel Puzzlewell because he couldn't answer her question, "What can change the nature of a man?"

7 is the place where you will find Lothar if Morte wasn't kidnapped.

Move the couch at 8 to find the stairs down to the underground.

The stairs to the top floor are at 9.

At 10 you will find the stairs back down to the ground floor.

The stairs from the underground to the ground floor are at 11.

At 12 you will find Mantouk and a group of Wererats. Mantouk is blocking the bridge, so you need to convince him to let you pass. Just tell him you're on a quest for Lothar. You can also attack Mantouk, or you can buy poisoned cheese from Giltspur back in the Lower Ward and give it to Mantouk, thereby killing him. If you kill their leader, the rest of the Wererats will attack you.

If killed, Mantouk will drop his book, the Grimoire of Pestilential Thought, and his skull, which you can then give to Lothar.

At 13 you will find the portal to the Weeping Stone Catacombs.

Lothar tells you that you should seek out Ravel.
