THE MORTUARY, THIRD FLOOR

Your primary goal on this floor is to find the Mortuary Sanctum Key that will allow you to open all doors and staircases so you can escape down to the first floor and out of the Mortuary. But now that you are here, you might as well explore the level thoroughly.

This floor is somewhat more dangerous than the second floor, as there are several Dustmen who will be rather suspicious to see you and Morte. So watch out who you speak to or what you say, or you will have the entire Mortuary chasing you!

Map Key

  1. Stairs down to the second floor. This is where you arrive when you take the stairs up from 14 on the second floor.
  2. Shelves containing Needle and Thread and Junk.
  3. Southern Storage Room.
  4. Two zombies and a skeleton.
  5. Shelf with the Mortuary Sanctum Key.
  6. Stairs down to the Preparation Room on the second floor. You need the Mortuary Sanctum Key to open the doors.
  7. Central shaft. Skeleton 42 is walking around this shaft.
  8. Skeleton 863.
  9. Northern Storage Room.
  10. Furnace.

The Key to Escaping

You first arrive on this floor at 1 on the map. Search the shelves here to find a Charcoal Charm, then make your way to the Southern Storage Room at 3. Loot these shelves as well to find:

Make sure to examine Zombie 79 at 4, especially the fanged circle on its forehead. This will allow you to open the earring you found at 16 on the second floor (250 XP) so you can wear it or sell it to a merchant.

If you "speak" to Skeleton 1221 at 4, or any of the skeletons on this floor, Morte will intervene to suggest that he could borrow the skeleton's body. But he will always find something wrong with the skeletons and will in fact remain bodyless throughout the game.

If you have a prybar, you can also use it to dismantle one of the skeletons on this floor for:

Proceed to 5 and loot the container here to find the Mortuary Sanctum Key. This key opens all staircases in the Mortuary. Alas, it does not open the front gate on the first floor but we'll get to that.

There is a Dustwoman snooping around here. If any of the Dusties on this floor should stop you and ask questions, tell them that you are not lost and that you are looking for someone, namely Dhall. If you say that you are lost, or that you woke up on a slab in the Preparation Room, they will raise the alarm and every Dustman, zombie and skeleton in the Mortuary will be after you.

With a Dexterity of at least 13, you can snap their necks before they raise the alarm. This will gain you 15 XP and a memory of doing the same thing many times before. You can also loot the body for some random treasure, a jagged knife and not least Dustman Robes. You can wear the Dustman Robes to gain free passage, and you can speak to "other" Dustmen relatively free of risk and tell them you are a new initiate called Adahn.

On a side note: Throughout the game you have several opportunities to tell people that your name is Adahn. If you do that often enough, it might lead to a little surprise at one point. ;-)

With the key you can access the stairs at 6. One of the shelves holds a Hammer. You can now escape down to the first floor but I suggest that you explore the rest of this level first.

Go to the central shaft at 7 to find Skeleton 42 walking around this shaft. If you speak to it (and if you observed Ei-Vene working and had the memory of hiding something inside a body), you will realize that this skeleton was the body. Reach inside the skeleton's ribcage for 250 XP and some treasure: A Green Steel Knife, two Clot Charms and some rags (useless). The skeleton will also disintegrate and drop a Wooden Club.

Skeleton 863 at 8 has a piece of parchment which you can read to learn that the Mortuary's prybar is missing and that it is needed to open some containers that are stuck. You should have found it already in the Southern Storage Room.

Loot the Northern Storage Room at 9 thoroughly to find:

The Bone Charm is the key to a portal on the first floor which you can use to escape the Mortuary.

The furnace at 10 looks terrifying. Fortunately you can't walk into it. I suspect that it was originally meant as a trap the game designers set that would allow you to burn up and thus lose the game.

Before leaving this level, make sure to loot the containers at 2. You can always use two extra Needles and Threads, and who knows, even some Junk may come in handy.

Once you've looted the floor thoroughly, go to one of the staircases and make your way down. You might want to stay on the second floor long enough to have Vaxis the False Zombie disguise you as a zombie (500 XP). Or deliver Needle and Thread plus Embalming Fluid to Ei-Vene if you haven't already done so. Finally, go down to the first floor.
