Previous Act: Back in Sigil

THE MAIN HALL

When you enter this room, you are treated to a short cinematic of The Transcendent One, the creature who showed up in Ravel's Maze and killed Ravel, summoning one of your former companions. If you are Good or Neutral, he will summon Ignus; if you are Evil, he summons Vhailor.

Your goal in this room is to activate the four ancient war machines in order to open the portal to the next step of your journey: The Trial of Impulse. Each of the war machines teleports you to a different location in the hall, and for each you see The Transcendent One killing one of your companions if the corresponding companion was in the party you brought to the Fortress of Regrets.

One thing I haven't indicated on the map is the location of the True Shadows that this area is simply creeping with. Try to attract the attention of as few of these creatures as possible at any given time, lest you be overwhelmed! If you find yourself surrounded by too many Shadows at any time, try to cast the spell "Cloudkill". This spell kills all True Shadows within its range.

If you are a Fighter, simply take on the Shadows one or two at a time, and use Abyssal Pipes and Stinky Candy for emergencies. If you are a Thief, hiding in shadows helps, and with the right stats you can kill a True Shadow with a single backstab. If you are a mage, your best option may be running and casting Cloudkill in emergencies.

One incredibly irritating thing is the traps at the points marked 11 on the map. Not only do they cast "Blacksphere" on you, causing damage and possibly paralyzing you for a short time (long enough for a few Shadows to surround and kill you), they also often cause the game to crash to the desktop. I have seen this error on several computers and conclude that it is a common annoyance. :-( If you experience this error, the only advice I can give you is to avoid the traps and try to eliminate all enemies at the extreme points of the map (4, 10, 12) and create a savegame there, just in case.

Overview of the Main Hall

You arrive in the Main Hall at 1. You can't exit the room except by opening the portal at 12 or by dying, in which case you are teleported back to the Fortress Entrance.

First, check out the clock at 2. There are other clocks near the other war machines but this clock has an inscription left by one of your earlier incarnations who also came to the Fortress: You should ignore the doors and use the cannons, then use the portal. This tells you how to handle this area: Seek out and use the four ancient war machines at 3, 5, 7 and 9 and then use the portal at 12.

The Ancient War Machine at 3 is one of the four war machines you should use. To use the machine, click on it and then choose the conversation options "Examine the panel" and then "Pull the lever marked with an 'X'." You will be teleported to 4 on the map.

If Fall-From-Grace was in your party when you entered the Fortress, you will see a short cinematic of The Transcendent One killing her.

The Ancient War Machine at 5 is another one of the machines you must use. This machine teleports you to 6 on the map, and if Dak'kon was in your party, you will witness his death at the hands of several Shadows summoned by The Transcendent One.

The third of the Ancient War Machines is at 7 and it teleports you to 8. This time you will see The Transcendent One killing Annah if she was in your party.

The final Ancient War Machine is at 9 and it teleports you to 10. If Nordom was in your party, this time you will witness his death at the hands of The Transcendent One.

There are traps in the floor at 11. Try to avoid them, as they may paralyze you for a short while or in some cases crash the game to the desktop.

When you have used all four war machines, go to 12 and enter the portal to the Trial of Impulse. You will see a short cinematic of either Ignus or Vhailor coming to meet you, depending on your alignment as described at the top of this page.
