I am curious to know: what are the governments of the countries of the SP members? And, are they a just and fair government in your opinion?

I would like to learn more about other forms of government.

I think the government in New Zealand do an OK job. Sure, I could think of a bunch of things to complain about if I wanted to, but overall, things could be much worse. Our Prime Minister, Helen Clark, can be quite amusing at times. She even provided her own voice to an animated version of herself in a local cartoon and seems to quite often turn up at school events.

We have a Mixed Member Proportional electoral system which means that several minor parties have representation in parliament. I think this helps moderate government policy because the ruling party can't just do whatever it feels like.

 

We're having a liberal lead rightwing government. Their position in the parliament is guaranteed by a party on the outer right wing, wich is based on a very nationalistic argumentation. All this recent fuss about the paintings of Mohammad is just an example.
I feel that this government has given Denmark a negative connotation worldwide...

 

Undertaker and Tassadar, would you care to explain where you're from, and what exactly is the government?

 

Tassadar's a Kiwi I reckon. And I think Undertaker is a Pole (lol!).

New Labour may as well be called 'Old Tory'. I don't like them as they are now, and I truly hate Tony Blair. The sooner he makes way for Gordon Brown, the better. At least the economy will be properly handled and we won't walk into pointless wars.
I'm also starting to lean towards Cameron's new Tory party...

 

Hmm, I guess Tassadar and I seem to have different opinions of our government. Maybe we actually agree, our parliament is full of imbeciles, but they don't seem to do a terrible job (that I can see).

 

What Undertaker says seems to be true of most Polish governments and by most I mean almost all.

 

Would you care to elaborate? Plenty of governments think that way. But what exactly is it? A Republic, semi-democracy, etc, and what do they preach?

 

I'm from the wonderful US of A...and even though we're invading half the world in the name of "democracy", we techinically have republic...pretty ironic...

 

Australia is a constitutional monarchy - although in practice, we're effectively a parliamentary democracy.

I don't like our incumbent government and believe them to be unscrupulous, manipulative, conniving and deceitful - moreso than politicians have any defensible reason for being. I won't say what I really think, I'd be here for days...

 

Presidential Democracy here.
Run by 300 + goverment. And the big (99%) majority of these guys is simply put, incompetent. Most of them have never worked in their life. And naturally allthough that i believe that the current goverment is trying to do a good job, they fail due to the fact that our economy was devastated by the previous goverments of last 60 years.

The current goverment belongs (theoritically) at the liberal right to centre wing. They have a broad majority in the Parliament.

The last goverment was supposedly leftish but the actions were totally rightish so right now these things have little meaning IMHO.

 

Presidential theocracy here in the US.

And my opinion of Bush would likely break several forum rules.

Same feeling as HB. Our government seems to do things rather well despite the fact that things could be done better.

We have our problems such as crime (who doesn't), unemployment, hospital waiting lists, traffic and petrol prices (the government has heavily taxed petrol), and too many people on welfare and those who are abusing it. But when we look at other countries we realise that they're doing a damn fine job.

What HB forgot to mention is that our government, provided a majority vote, can do anything it wants - we have no constitution.

 

Same as NonSequitur - the government here is ****. They love to spread paranoia and steal freedoms using it. They've absolutely failed helth-system wise. Backing out of multiculturalism half way through (even if you think multiculturalism is a bad thing - surely you'd have to agree that trying to pull out while you already have other cultures here is far, far worse). Environment? Well hey, we didn't do anything to stop whaling in our teritory. Not to mention that we're in this war of America's for no good reason but arsekissing. Illegal immigrants in concentration camps ... Oh, and the system doesn't really allow you to say much, just vote to replace one incompetent dip**** with another, with only two groups standing any chance at all and both sucking.

I mean, come on, when you have an opposition that bad, is it any wonder Howard's stayed in so long? It's not that he's doing a good job - but at least he can keep his own frigging party working...

Er, yeah, there's much more, but let's just leave it there, hmm?

 

Parlamentary Democracy in a federal republic.
We had a change of government here a few month ago. The socialdemocrats and the (conservative-libertarian) christian democrats formed a coalition in parliament. They are the biggest parties here, so the opposition - consisting of the Free Democrats (Neo-Libartarian), the Green Party, and the socialists - is quite small.

The "big coalition", as it is called, had not the chance to get much done since then, but they get quite high notes in polls.
They are under high pressure, because they have to work on a lot of reform projects including the "state reform", a change of relations between federal administration and the state administrations.

Other projects are education, integration of immigrants, social system (health, pensions, worker market, etc). These are the most important ones.

 

No, Fabius, don't use that "libertarian" word. Say liberal! Keep your on vocabulary!

Switzerland.

System: Confederation with a semi-direct democracy

Current goverment: Federal council with 7 heads consisting out of of mix of right-wing liberals, less right wing liberals, conservatives and social-democrats.

And one of them is Blocher

 

In theory the UK has a democracy with a constitutional Monarch, however in practice we have a civil service that is not elected or representative of the people that implement and decide policy, while allowing the politicians the illusion that they are doing that. (I don't think I'm being too cynical there).
