We probably made it sound that way, because that's pretty much exactly what we were asserting. Just because priests/pastors etc have the authority to marry someone there IS a divide between state and religiously recognized marriage. To use your Catholic example again, the Catholic Church does not recognize same sex marriages, but 13 states do... That seems to be a divide to me.

I do not recall Drew or I asserting that the inability for gay couples to marry in most states was in any way fair. We agreed that it wasn't. We just didn't agree (and we still don't) that it is discriminating against religion, because they don't acknowledge secular gay marriages either.

 

Churches are not required by law to perform interracial marriages -- they can refuse (although they often lose membership). There is no reason to assume they will be required to perform gay marriages.

I find it hilarious when "Christians" use convenient excerpts from the bible to justify what they believe in and do -- while completely ignoring the parts they don't want to follow.

 

Pplr, in order for laws against gay marriages to qualify as religious discrimination, those laws must cut exclusively against the church. Since most states acknowledge no homosexual unions whatsoever, it cannot be argued that the state is specifically discriminating against a particular religion. If it is discriminating against anyone it is discriminating against gay people -- not their churches.

No, your letter to the editor would not be trolling. As a former newspaper owner/editor it always our option on what letters to the editor we wished to publish. Any letters NOT signed were automatically trashed, usually unread. All signed were always kept on file and published letters were kept with the signed original attached. Brevity was always a prime priority. Grammar and spelling were noted with (sic) and left as written by the author. If the topic was like this one we usually tried to publish pro and con. Letters were always published FREE of charge. You would be surprised at people/businesses that wanted to pay to have the view published. We called those items ads.

I'd almost forgotten about this.

I wrote the letter, but they didn't publish it. Apparently the topic was saturated. However, a month or two later, right after the gay marriage bill passed, somebody else wrote a much shorter piece that simply said "Now that we're allowing gay marriages, perhaps we will be allowing polygamous marriages next?" (Paraphrased, but it was only a sentence or two).
