    Go Sox! Woot.

It would have been cooler IMO if it'd gone to 7 games, but hey - in a way, it's almost cooler that they swept it.

This was one of the greatest sports moments I've ever been a part of! Next to the Phillies, the Red Sox are my favorite American League Team. To come back from being one game from elimination to winning your next 8 straight games to capture the Championship!!! Fabulous, simply Fabulous!!!!

    Go Sox Go!

If the Cubs haven't won since 1908 then they definitely deserve to win next year. The witchdoctor who applied their curse must have been even more powerful than Babe Ruth!

Is the World Series really sponsored by a newspaper called "The World"? If so, I have a lot of apologies to make.

Ditto... No idea about who sponsored it. But why is this newspaper called "The World"? We don't get it down here... :p

What teams HAVEN'T won The World Series? I would think they would be even more deserving than The Cubs.

Some of today's teams aren't as old as the Cubs' dry spell. If they haven't won the series yet, tell 'em to get in line. :D

Ahhhhhh yes, the other countries of the world jumping on the same old crap of the arrogant Americans who don't invite everyone else into their league to play boo hoo.
@Faraaz, thanks for your clearing up of the meaning of the "World Series". this dates back over 90 years and at that time I don't believe their was a team from oh Japan, New Zealand, Spain or really any other country other than Central and South America which is where supposedly the game got it's origins from the Incan or Aztec(can't remember) civilization.

If you look today at the names and nationalities of the players on any given team you will see a very diverse group of individuals. And I am sure if there was someone good enough to make this league and earn the millions of dollars to go with it, I am sure they would be welcomed.

And as far as American Futbol, yeah we suck, rugby verses other nations, yeah we suck, but kudos to those of you who have great teams. Do me a favor, when one of you beefed up, half brain dead, Fosters drinking rugby teams wins the championship, post it here so I can cry just like you do.

Congrats Sox, I am from St. Louis and you guys played a hell of a series and deserve the spoils. Tell Ramirez to get a haircut.

Actually, there is a New Zealander playing in the US major league. Well, when I say "playing", I think he is (or was) on the squad of the Atlanta Braves but I've never heard of him getting any game time (but is still probably one of our highest paid sportsmen - after Steve Williams, Tiger Woods' caddy........).

Plus, I have always been lead to believe that baseball and softball originated from the old English game of rounders. What's all this about it coming from the Aztecs?

And, I've just realised that the New Zealand softball team is called the "Black Sox" D'oh! Even we can't spell!

well congrats Harbourboy, you've got or had a Kiwi in the league. And the braves are a great team. As for the Aztecs, it was a game that included 3 infielders and a pitcher, they threw a ball of some material to a batter and her would attempt to hit it through a big stone pillar with a hole in the center. if he did that it was like a home run. but if he did not hit it through the hole the "infielders had the oppurtunity to field the ball and get him out(lack of the proper term in Aztec). I know about rounders and it is alot closer to the actual game of baseball but no one knows for 100% where it actually started. I've even read they believe it may have come from some Scottish game. Who knows.

I don't think it's a matter of "wanting" to play in the American leagues, why the hell would anyone from Asia, or Europe, or whatever wanna do such a thing ? They would be spending more time in an airplane than in a stadium.

But what needs to end is that silly "worldchampions" stuff. How can a team that just won the NATIONAL basketball association title, claim the title of worldchampions ? Same goes for the MLB, NHL, and NFL. In all four sports are only teams from the North American continent participating, yet still you automatically become worldchampions when you win the league. That just doesn't make much sense, does it ?

I'm just curious now, since every league ends with a fresh worldchamp, does this rule also apply to your soccerleague, the MLS ? Cause that would really knock me off my shoes. :D

@Pac man, I believe the idea of the World Series Champions still stems from the paper that funded the series. The paper was the world, so they would be the World Champions. I think this is the only case though. I don't agree with the world champions of the other leagues. And the NHL is not the world champions, they are the Stanley Cup Champions.

I can't say that I have ever heard anyone suggest that the team that wins the Stanley Cup is the world champion in hockey - that title has always gone to the winner of the World Cup. The NHL may boast of having the world's best hockey players playing in the league but there has never been any claim of it being a world championship.

I imagine that the same is true for the other leagues that you mentioned. The fact is that the money you can earn in any of those leagues is considerably greater than what athletes would earn back home so a lot of the world's best athletes in these sports come to play in North America.

If we managed to produce a superstar level football, cricket or rugby player chances are they would be heading off oversees to play where they could actually make a decent buck.

I suspect that the highest paid cricketer in the world (Sachin Tendulkar? Or some Australian?) would still get paid less than the reserve second base fielder for the Milwaukee Brewers. Go the Brewers.

EDIT: Just checked and 41 out of the top 50 highest paid athletes in the world in 2004 live in the USA.

True but I imagine that the top paid cricket/football/rugby player in North America earns next to nothing so a North American star level athlete in one of these sports would still be paid much better if he went elsewhere.

Today in Boston obsolutely nothing got done. The morons in charge were at first planning to have the parade on Friday. Then they started to realize that when the Patriots won their first Superbowl they had 1 million people show up in below zero temperatures. They are estimating that 5 million people will be decending on Boston for the parade. They have since moved it to Saturday so the kids will not miss school. I am still predicting disaster as I do not believe the parade route that they have chosen can handle the volume of people.

As to all the whiners who are claiming that "The World" doesn't get to play, I totally disagree. The majority of the teams may be based in the U.S. but plenty of players are from foreign countries. On the Sox alone we have two Dominicans, a Columbian, and I have no idea where David Ortiz is from. If you want to play on the best team in the world you have to come to the U.S. and play in Major League Baseball. I won't argue the point that the NBA may not be the best league in the world, but that is because I despise what the NBA has become.

As to hangovers, Little Snook woke up because of all of the hooping it up me and the Mrs. were doing. We partied in the house until around 1:30am calling everyone we knew (it wasn't like anybody hadn't watched the game). I staggered into work around 9:30 today and was one of the first to make it. The phone lines and the e-mails were almost on fire all day. None of it was work related and nobody cared. It was a beautiful day.

Wow. Sounds like this thing was quite a big deal in Boston then.

That sounds a bit like what happened in Greece a few months ago when they did so well in Euro 2004 (but without all the complaints from the teams that didn't win.........)

I was hoping they'd take some time before finishing up the series, because now there's nothing to watch! Now the two sports I follow most - hockey and baseball are both over.

You need to find yourself a suitable third sport to fill the gap in your sporting calendar. Although don't most American sports have such extended pre and post season periods that they practically go all year around anyway? I know it feels like the soccer season never ends these days.
