Why don't vendors show back covers?

I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum or the "Whatnots?" forum as the rant applies equally to purchasing movies online, either VHS or DVD (and it's been a problem since the beginning).

Why is it that when you're shopping online for a book or movie, the vendors only show you the front cover of the item, when there is usually a synopsis or additional information on the back cover that would help you determine if it is the correct book/movie that you are looking for?

Also if you are shopping for yourself, the cover often has artwork that has little to do with the story, or only marginally related, while the synopsis on the back tells you what it is about. Yet vendors will only show the front cover, rarely the back. They also don't give much of a description of the content, often just the number of pages (book) or the recording length (movie, and minus that unskippable ads at the start) and sometimes the year published, but no synopsis.

Drives me nuts. Sorry for the rant, just venting trying to figure out which one in a series is the one they wanted when I didn't get an exact title and the sites aren't showing me the back covers.

I guess it depends on the vendor, but usually you get the synopsis listed in the description of the item. At least on Amazon...
