Why does Overwatch remind me of New Coke?

I just accidentally clicked on some clickbait when trying to scroll (hate those new thin scrollbars) and saw this article.
It says Blizzard is taking Overwatch 1 offline in preparation of switching over to Overwatch 2.
Why does such a decision remind me of something Coca-Cola did over 35 years ago when I was a little kid that backfired spectacularly?
For those of you too young to remember, look up New Coke.

On the other hand, Microsoft has sorta learned this lesson but has had trouble weaning customers off first XP and then Windows 7 even though they really want them to use Windows 8, 8.1, 10 11. Amusing how they did not have that problem with Vista, 8, or 8.1.
