The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street (new remaster)

Song writing and Performance: ***** 5 out of 5
Sound quality: *** 3 out of five

Yeah, they pretty much blew the remaster of one of the Stone's best efforts. There is too much high-end to start with, and there is a fair level of noise in the highs. While the vocals and guitars have a nice "upfront" sound, especially Mick Taylor's superb performance, Charlie Watt's drums sound tinny and Wyman's bass (*) is almost sonically invisible, even on playback with a 10" powered sub.

    * Wyman did not attend a few of the sessions and Taylor and Richards doubled on some of the bass parts in his absence.

Edit: Just out of curiosity, I checked the sub, and sure enough my son (2 years old) had spun the dial down on the back of the unit. He often likes to hangout behind it. The next play should yield better results on the lows....

    Edit Update:

Even with the sub adjusted I can't add any more stars to the overall sound value of the new remaster of Exile. On second listen, I'm even more dissatisfied with the high-end and the noise level. There is a bit more bass and the lows are a bit better, but the overall low-end is somewhat murky sounding. But I can't say enough about what a great record Exile truly is. Mick Jagger has often complained that Exile is too much of a "roots" record; it is, but nevetheless it's a really fantastic "roots" recording, at least in my humble opinion.
