What's with Steam still showing up in the install?

Having been involved in other things lately, my disk copy of the game gathered dust for a couple of years. I'm opposed to the attachment of apron strings to games the way Steam distributions are handled in most instances, and EA's Origins clone of Steam is worse, of course.

I purposely bought my copy on disk media. But the first thing I see when I look at the Setup.Exe file is Steam. SO: what's the deal here?

There exist games that use Steam for distribution and copy protection that are also distributed on physical disk. All that does is allow you to avoid downloading the initial installation.
