[IMG] I just noticed a very steep increase in RAM prices. What has happened to cause this increase?

AMD went with DDR2 with their new processors, Core 2 Duo came out not too long ago, and the holiday season is approaching.

Which only means that the prices will be back to normal in a few months. It fluctuates heavily in the case of RAM. Wait it out.

Bah, that is too true. You simply cannot find any reasonably decent memory for under $200 (for 2Gb DDR2 SDRAM). Apparenty the new core 2 duo pentiums work better with higher speed DDR2 (800), on the account of the processor bus speed being 1066 Mhz. So, for this type of memory at least, I understand that the prices have increased by about $100 in the last month.

Yeah, if you can wait, it is definitely a good idea.

The 1066 FSB speed is the reason 533Mhz memory is good for the Core 2 Duo. When you put two sticks of RAM in dual channel mode, that 533 becomes 1066, so the memory runs 1:1 with the bus speed.

A quick check at New Egg shows that 533Mhz RAM is now selling for the same price as 667. Oh, well...

Actually right now Corsair sells 667 memory cheaper than the 533 one:  :

(at the moment I am looking, 2Gb of the 533 is $250, and the 667 one is $230).

Another reason RAM prices have jumped is partially due to supply and demand from the chip makers themselves. If they are anything like the company I work for, the past few months have been dreadfully slow production wise...but then, the big customers like Dell and others start building systems enmass anticipating the holiday season, and the supply of OEM parts dries up quickly.

Now until the middle of January is the worst time to buy any technology products. :bad: :rolling:

This also the end of the fiscall year for the military. Money is being spent heavily before the funds alloted for next year's budget comes out.

Military or the government, I guess. My friend working for the govt. tells me that they spent about 20K on computers which they did not really need that bad, but the money would have been lost otherwise (well, at least lost for them). Your (or our ) taxes at work :)
