Denmark - a bit flat isn't it? ;) Himmelbjerget or some such thing? 150m? I'm surprised you guys didn't invent the bicycle.

Haven't been there for years now, other than transit at Kastrup, but as a kid I went to Legoland and Tivoli as you do. Good fun then, and probably still would be now come to think of it!

There is also the Roskilde festival and lots of drinking culture. Hmm should go back soon. :)

yes, the drinking culture is always encouraged in denmark. Everything is almost associated with drinking. To far out sometimes.

PS; I am going to Skanderborg festival in start of 9-10-11th of august. Perhaps I will see you there then :)

I'm reasonably certain it lies north of Germany, west of Russia, and east of the United States. Beyond that, I seem to recall it being involved in a little war...

    ...the Thirty Years War! :hahaerr:

[IMG] Oh and IIRC Greenland and Faroe Islands are officially parts of Denmark...

  6. ArchAngel Guest

yep. Although rather cosmetic. The most visits come from our queen and the rest of the royalty. They (not the royalties) are constantly airing the oppotunities of seperating Denmark.

They only have two or three of the around 143 seats in the ministary. Last election period the right and left were exactly split and their votes actually forged danish politics for 4 years.

[IMG] Denmark, the land of Hamlet and there where our friendly, yet a bit alcohole-happy northern neighbours live.

Denmark owns greenland (no, that's not part of the USA even though it's (a) so much closer to the US that to denmark and (b) though there is an airbase in Thule) and the faroer islands too. So iirc theorectically it is the second largest country in europe (if you count in greenland).

Quite a bit for a Brit. My last girlfriend (yes I know it's a long time ago now but is she replaceable) was from Denmark though she had been living and working in the UK for a few years when we got together. Consequently I have been across on a few occaisions on holiday and to meet the family.

Some of the things that struck me were:

They love thier flag and are patriotic without being aggresive about it (what a refreshing change). So it seems like every house has a long streamer type flag and a flagpole.
They are generally really nice people who are relaxed, yet sensible, yet fun, yet responsible, etc. They just seem to have got the fun/serious mix perfectley balanced.
They have great parties and all ages seem to mix really well at these. Though the hand in hand singing and bloke on the electric piano take a bit of getting used to :)
The celebrate Christmas (well the meal and presents side of things) a day early. They still sing around a christmas tree that is lit up with real candles in (often) wooden homes and seem oblivious to the fire risk :)
The countryside is really nice and picturesque.
The climate is nowhere near as bad as many people think. Although it's Scandanavian it isn't that far North. So the weather is similar to the UK.
Its very flat, hardley any hills.
They have a real problem with coastal erosion.
They love their little holiday homes and many people live in these holiday homes near the sea during the summer. When you add this to the costal erosion problem, many of these homes become too close to the sea......
The food is a bit oily for my taste and their is a big bias towards fish.
The eat lots of open sandwhiches (small pieces of dwarven bread with anything piled on top).
    They quite like hotdogs.
The country is made up of 100s of little islands, many unihabited. There are two main islands the more cosmopoliton one being on the East. The more realxed on the West.
Lots of Germans like to go on seaside holidays there. They often end up being rescued from the North Sea :)
The roads are really quite and more than three at once is considered a traffic jam.
The sell porn magazines in Supermarkets.
The sell great beer and still return the empty bottles.
Many of them speak good English. There also seem to be a high number who's English is so good that you think they are English. My ex for example.
Their Language is very tricky to learn and difficult to pronounce.
They have a number of world famous brands which is amazing for such a small country (population about 5 million, which is about the same as Greater London). These include Lego and Heineken.
    and loads of other stuff.

Basically, it's somewhere I'd love to live if I could manage the language.

The only things that I know about Denmark are that it's capital is Copenhagen and it sounds cool in French.

    Danemark, anyone?

The most important thing about Denmark is that when you're on war with them in Europa Universalis you can't just conquer them like some German dutchy but you have to build damned ships for Scania landfall. When I play Poland I sooner conquer Spain than Denmark.

Seriously, I know quite a bit, although it's exclusively history or geography of some sort, but it's anyway not as important as simply knowing where to find the rest when it's really needed :)

By the way, Denmark and Poland have had two formal alliances: during the reign of Danish Kings Valdemar IV and Frederik III. Before that, Sven Forkbeard married the daughter of Polish monarch and thus Knut (yea, the one who took England over) was half-Polish, which didn't restrain him from selling his sword to German Emperor invading Poland. Some Polish warriors joined Danish and Norwegian Vikings in their annual courtesy visits to British Isles. Probably that's why they succeeded ;) Also the King Erik VII, whose real name was Boguslav (orig. Bogusław) was descended from a dynasty of Polish vassals, the Dukes of Pomerania.
