    I earn about 400€ a month less than the average for a teacher with my education and experience. The best way to illustrate is that when I got the job I was given a salary higher than my demand. Basically, I screwed up and demanded way too little when I was employed and it is pretty much impossible to raise it without switching employers.

    That's totally different than the US. There is NO salary negotiation here. As previously noted, you salary is dependent solely on years of service, and your education - bachelors, 30+, masters, or PhD.

    We scrapped that system roughly 20 years ago to "reward" good teachers. Apparently there are no good teachers because since that system was scrapped basically no teachers get any raises that even keep up with inflation.

    We have a bit of both, here. The system Aldeth mentions occurs here, too, but on top of that some teachers who are in higher demand (certain subject areas, like maths and Te Reo Maori, for example) often don't deal with the collective contract and are able to drive a better bargain individually. I need to decide soon whether I want to go with the Union or individually - had a real fascinating chat with the local union head the other day.
