@starwalker - actually my comment on lore was stating there is a big difference between W18/I18 and W20/I20 or W21/I19. Point taken nonetheless.

However, I'm still confused by your explanation of the battle. Whenever I have done that, the lilch immediately teleports to the doorway of the little corridor your party is standing in. There was no way for me to get close to him without activating the beholder. Those two are easily the hardest combination in the room, and those were the two I always had to fight simultaneously. Where was the lich if you managed to deal with the fighter on his own first?

@Fel - typically, I don't rush off to get Imoen, unless I'm planning on including her in my party, which I usually do not. Therefore, I usually do ALL of the Chapter 2 quests before leaving for Spellhold. It's not unusual for my party to have about 2 million XP each for that encounter, so I don't consider that "early".

The lich always teleports a little way into the alcove for me. I snuck my party into the little extra area with the stairs. Think I had to open the door or spot a secret wall or something to get the extra little room. Then triggered the lich which stayed out of sight but moved from the center of the table to just inside the little alcove you start out in and then his spell trigger with his protections goes off and I am out of sight.

How clever. I never thought there was enough room. Then again, I never noticed a secret door there either. The problem I always had was there was no way for me to effectively hide from him, and in order to engage him, I had to also engage the beholder. That's not a problem with a higher level party, but quite difficult in the early going. I'll have to look for that secret door you mentioned on my next play through.

The "secret" door is the same door you came through to get inside. The stairs are where you came from basically and it's not open when arrive because you "always" shut the door behind you.

How do you deal with the melee? they really can't go after the lich without being seen by the beholder from where the lich stands.

The Summons when it works right get a few spells out of the lich. You toss out another summons. (I think I did them one at a time.) The Lich sunfired the beholder off screen and I waited until a message appeared at the bottom saying the beholder was dead so I never had to fight it myself. Yes it's less xp but I got through it.
