I was going on a bored search through Encarta the other day and randomly came across this piece of trivia.

"Balder or Baldur, in Norse mythology, the god of light and joy, son of Odin and Frigga, king and queen of the gods. Having dreamed that Balder's life was threatened, Frigga extracted an oath from the forces and objects in nature, animate and inaminate, that they would not harm Balder, but she forgot the mistletoe. The gods, thinking Balder safe, cast darts and stones at him. The malicious giant Loki put a twig of mistletoe in the hands of Balder's twin, the blind Hoder, god of darkness, and directed his aim against Balder, who fell pierced to the heart. After the death of Balder, Odin sent another son, the messenger Hermod, to the underworld to plead for Balder's return. The god would be released only if everything in the world would weep for him. Everything wept except one old woman in a cave, and Balder could not return to life."

And there I was thinking it was just another name.
    Interesting, though.

Isn't it Baldr? And why is this in The Playground?

"Odin's son, Baldur, the god of Love and Light, is sacrificed at Midsummer by the dart of the mistletoe, and is reborn at Jul (Yule). Supposedly his return will not occur until after the onslaught of the Ragnarok, which I see as a cleansing and enlightenment more than wanton, purposeless destruction. Baldur's blind brother Hodur was his slayer, whose hand was guided by the crafty Loki. He is married to the goddess of Joy, Nanna."

There are probably variations on the spelling of the name.

TP probably posted here because of the name Baldur. A mod will move it if they wish.

Interesting, but this doesn't really have anything to do with the figure of Baldur in Forgotten Realms. The FR Baldur was an adventurer who founded the city if I remember right. Apart from the name, he doesn't share any similarities with the Norse god.

Considering this concerns FR lore, it's going into the D&D forum.

    Baldur is short for Balduran.
