    So, I read this yesterday.
This all spilled when Lt. Colonel Michael Holmes, the officer in charge of the unit, spilled it to Rolling Stones. I'm wondering why he didn't talk to the congressmen, but that's another story. The team was ordered to target senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman, Jack Reed, Al Franken and Carl Levin, Representative Steve Israel of the House Appropriations Committee, and Admiral Mike Mullen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

To be clear, that was illegal. It is against regulations, probably a violation of their oath, and definitely unethical. Gen. David Petraeus has called for an investigation. If it's true, I'm hoping for a court martial, dishonorable discharge, and severe jail time.

I'm not sure what this included, here. Is it basically lobbying? The US army is supposed to be non-partisan, but I think it's had a voice in policymaking for a while now.

It's more than lobbying. It's using military resources and training to identify psychological vulnerabilities in the leaders of our own nation (including superior officers) to try and manipulate them without their knowledge. We're not exactly talking subliminal messaging here, but we're also not talking taking the Senator for a nice night on the town with some facy champaign, either. This is the kind of stuff we feed into propaganda designed to make the enemy desert their posts or betray their friends.

More importantly it is most probably illegal. From Field Manual FM 3-05-30:
The general ordering this was apparently disobeying Executive Order S-12333 and DOD Instructions S-3321.1.

For ordinary soldiers, disobeying orders gets them a ... court martial?
